“The big picture and the details are all excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2013

Boutique-style hotel but bigger. All the decorating is soothing, with woods and driftwood art, and objects of interest. There are many well-spaced conversation arrangements/nooks throughout the first floor lobby and restaurant areas. Loaner bicycles are readily available for places like the Katy Trail or the White Rock Trail, and it is said that the hotel shuttle will transport you and the bikes to the starting point (we didn't try, but great perk! Next time...)

Oh yes - and citrus-fruit spiked waters and iced teas are always in the lobby to great you, and never seem to run out (bravo to catering staff). Very welcome when you return from the State Fair after the Texas-Oklahoma game when the fans are restless.

In the rooms - very high quality ironed sheets, pillow choices, plenty of big fluffy towels, fantastic pounding water pressure and shower head. (Bathroom door a sliding one that takes a bit of muscle to manuever - WD40 treatment please?) We got the least expensive room ~300 sq feet and it still felt roomy - flows from bedroom to our alcove AND large closet to open-ish bathroom look, so this creates the roomy feel. And 4 corner windows for light, lush fresh clean modern draperies.

Good internet though be sure you sign up as a Kimpton In-touch member to reap the benefit. Decent TV stations, but not great. In an upscale locale like this I'd expect more than the basic TV plan i.e. I couldn't see Bravo silly shows (but fun on vacation) like 4 Weddings. As this place may lend itself to weddings and events, I'm surprised you can't see the wedding shows on TV in your spare time to whet appetite for that spending.

Wine reception daily, gratis, even with hors d'oeuvres and classy nut assortments (including Brazils, Cashew and Macadamias). Exceedingly friendly and capable staff, especially coffee and wine staff, valets, housekeeping (unsolicited: "do you need extra towels?"),internet service, and front desk. Clearly everyone works well and happily as a team.

Really enjoy that this location welcomes well-behaved pets! We did not avail ourselves of the opportunity (left two siameses home), but several guests brought charming canine buddies who were unerringly well-behaved and friendly, adding to the homieness and ambiance.

So much fun to have a couple of other peoples' nice pets to dote on while staying here. They cater to all pet needs, including Ice Water at the front door (is gets hot in Dallas) and pet beds. Yet there is not a hint of untoward animal existence - no fur, no barking.... Kimpton has definitely tapped a vein on the pet-owning market - Smart.

The pool is a really great scene - lots of clean stone and an infinity pool. Neither feels harsh chemically at all - very soft clean water. Long wide pool and hot tub for 6-8. 2nd floor rooftop. Plenty of large yellow beach towels, chairs and a covered club-like aquatic couch area. Drink service up there too if you want.

To be fair, the location is at a major highway intersection and only has $23/daily valet parking - no alternatives though heaven knows we tried. My theory is if it is a car-centric town you should presume free parking or cheaper alternative to valet.

You never hear the noise of the roads, but the in and out to the property can be hazardous. The valets manage the volume very well but I can see this could become a problem during events - the front door is like a postage stamp fitting about 6 cars, and only the approach from the south off 75 or from the west on Mockingbird is reasonable. The approach from the east off Mockingbird requires either an illegal u-turn at 75, or a dicey left turn across Mockingbird through the abutting strip mall. And we were always approaching from the northeast so...

Anyway though, we totally recommend the Palomar - convenient to everything. We got a medium decent rate reserving directly, but I see here some people have gotten much better rates. I wish I knew the trick for that, but meantime we'll still be back even at our medium rate, and will try other Kimpton properties.

Hi Sue,

Thanks for the amazing review of the Hotel and the numerous offerings we have available for the Guests. Just to confirm, we will happily drive you and the bikes over to White Rock Lake and pick you up when are finished. We're going to hold you to taking a ride around the Lake during your next visit.
Thank you as well for the feedback concerning some WD 40 and an additional TV Station or two. We'll be happy to build on our current listings.

I truly appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts and look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Regards,

Andrew

Lovely hotel within walking distance of the SMU football stadium, restaurants, shopping and Starbucks. Very airy, floor-to-high-ceilings windows, modern lobby with many attendants for opening the doors, getting your car, helping with luggage, etc. Typical Southern charm. There is a complimentary happy hour from 5-7pm daily, with wine and snack offerings - that is standard in Kimpton Hotels. Several lobby nooks with tables where drinks and hors d'oeuvres can be served, an outdoor fireplace seating area, as well as the hotel restaurant 214, which is available for very good breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. Rooms are plenty spacious, comfortable bed, good lighting and desk area. The bathroom was equally spacious with efficient use of space. The staff was extremely courteous and helpful. The hotel is located right off Hwy 75, easy to find. The Palomar, along with its sister hotel about a mile away, The Lumen, are the best choices for top hotels in the Highland Park/Dallas area. We'll definitely be back.

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking the pool, otherwise it's a very commercial view area.

Green Features: The Palomar is very "green" oriented with signs suggested re-use of towels or linens to cut down on water in laundry use, and led/energy efficient bulbs.

Make no mistake, the Hotel Palomar has an excellent staff from the top all the way to the valet who greeted me upon my arrival. Its a beautiful hotel with a wonderful ambiance including its inside and outside dining area, lobby and rooms. The food is excellent and the people accommodating. It seems to be a hotspot for the area with many beautiful and well dressed people visiting every night of my four night stay. My only disappointment is with its location. Its on two busy roads and a significant distance from downtown Dallas. In other words, its not a big city hotel from which you can just walk outside and the best of Dallas is within easy reach. I had a blast there and enjoyed myself immensely but if your intention is to experience downtown Dallas it may be inconvenient for you. There is a train right across the street that goes downtown. I just didn't have the time to try it out.

Hi RoboPop,

Thanks for the great review about our Hotel. I was very happy to see your comments regarding our amazing staff and property. We think we have an incredible Hotel and the people that work here are very proud of their home and their outstanding service.

You are correct in that we are not situated directly downtown, which we find as a benefit to our Guests that want to experience some of the culture that Dallas has to offer while still being close to the City. Our location provides immediate access to world-class shopping, dining and nightlife as well as some of the best attractions in Dallas. In addition, the Dallas Area Rapid Transit is located directly across the street for convenience.

Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you back once again at the Hotel Palomar.

A short stay for business, but impressed by the property and staff. There was a glitch at check-in with a long wait, only one guest ahead of me and two employees at the front desk. Other than that, all was really good. Nice room (albeit with "lovely" view of the roof of the building--avoid a North facing room). LOVED the zebra-striped robe in the guest room. Wonderful bath amenities. Again, short stay, so not lots to say, but overall a very nice property and good staff. Beautiful art throughout property.

Thanks for the nice review. I apologize for the issue at check-in in what normally is a pretty smooth process. Glad to see you enjoyed our animal print robes. We have quite a zoo going on with zebra, cheetah and even a rare sighting of an occasional giraffe print robe throughout.

We are very fortunate with our artwork and appreciate you mentioning. The Owners commissioned a number of local artists when they opened the Palomar and you can find a gallery's worth of incredible pieces throughout the property.

Thanks again and we look forward to welcoming you back soon.

I am traveling a lot for work and I stayed in many hotels in the past years and Palomar is exactly what you are looking for such business trip; rooms are clean, comfortable and big enough, restaurant is serving great quality foods and the bar is a perfect spot to have a good drink, or glass of scotch. The hotel is also performing a wine tasting every day from 5@7 where you can enjoy some good wine and meet other travelers. I definitely recommend that hotel.

Thanks Matlaro for the great review and recommendation. Glad to see you enjoyed your visit and appreciate you pointing out the good stuff of staying at the Palomar.

Our evening wine hour is a staple at all Kimpton Hotels throughout the Country and was started by our Founder, Bill Kimpton at his first hotel in San Francisco. Bill loved to open a bottle of wine or two at the end of the day and sit and socialize with his Guests, thus beginning a tradition that has been carried on in all of our hotels for over 30 years.

Thanks again and come back soon.

The reason this hotel gets a 4 is simply because of the service. Everyone we came into contact with was very friendly and helpful. At one point, we considered changing rooms and the front desk staff even offered to show us a room to help us decide.
My complaints about this hotel are really beyond their control. The location is somewhat loud from the traffic noise. Also, getting in and out of the hotel can be a challenge with all of the traffic. The rooms were nice, but not exceptional.
All in all, not sure that I would stay here again just because of the location.

Room Tip: Try to avoid the rooms closest to the elevators.

We've never stayed at a hotel that was actually excited about us bringing our dog before and we were genuinely impressed by their dog-friendliness! We even booked our stay online with an advertised special promotion that gave us a discount if we brought a pet. When we checked in, they gave us a nice gift bag for our dog, filled with doggie treats and a doggie toy. In the room waiting for us, was a nice doggie bed as well as food & water bowls for her. There were many other guests with leashed dogs in the lobby as well as a welcoming bone-shaped water bowl at the entrance for dogs to drink from. All staff members took the opportunity to stop and pet our dog, during our 2 night stay.

As for us humans, the hotel was also very nice and gay friendly. Very contemporary decor with good music piped throughout. The staff was friendly and the concierge desk was super helpful in securing us dinner reservations in hard to get restaurants. The gym was just a little better than average, but their pool deck and bar service were outstanding. Make sure that you join their Kimpton Hotel's loyalty program "In Touch" before booking, as the extra perks are definitely worth it!

There is no parking on site, so get ready to pay daily valet charges. The valet staff was pretty efficient, but left dirty foot prints on our brand new car door, as if they were kicking the door open.

Overall, we highly recommend this hotel and will be staying their again.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the great review. We love welcoming Guests with their dogs and appreciate you pointing out all the complimentary amenities we provide to all the furry 4-legged guests. We'll also be happy to 'dog-sit' if needed and have a nice large grassy area next to the Hotel for those morning or evening walks or a little game of fetch.

Glad you enjoyed our infinity-edged pool. It's a beautiful space with bar and food service during the weekends of summer.

Please reach out to me personally about your car this is something I would like to talk to you about personally.

Thanks again for the review and we look forward to seeing you soon.
