You need to look fast to find this place, which is across Central Expressway from the main Southern Methodist University campus and the new George W. Bush Presidential Library. There are SMU buildings on this side of the highway, also, so don't drive away thinking you're lost if you see a sign saying SMU. Heading away from the highway service road, scan the sidewalk near ground-level for a little chalkboard that says, "Fresh Pastries & Artisan Breads." Heading toward the highway service road, look for a plain white sign that says, "The Village Baking Company," on the side of a red brick building just past a big concrete multi-story parking garage. The small parking lot between the red building and the parking garage has two picnic tables (each with a little vase of flowers), and that's where you can eat your pastries and artisan bread if you don't want to drive off right away. This place sells terrific pastries (we never got as far as trying the bread) and gives away coffee. Forget about décor or staying out of the weather, and just appreciate the great pastries for as many mornings as you are in the neighborhood.
