I visited the Dallas Farmer's Market with a friend this summer after living in the Dallas area for 17 years. My first thought as we walked into the fruit and vegetable vendors area of the market was, "Why haven't I been here before?" The market boasts a wide selection of locally-grown produce and products from small farms or family businesses. You could smell the freshness in the vine-ripened tomatoes, and the juicy peaches we sampled were truly delicious. Most of the vendors were incredibly friendly and eager to offer samples of their produce.
While we spent most of our time roaming around the fruit and vegetable sheds, we also went into the indoor market building to sample some of the products offered by merchants there. The tempting smell of authentic local food from the restaurants filled the building. It wasn't too crowded since we'd gotten there before lunch time on a weekday, so we stopped for a quick lunch. The Mexican food was delicious and the prices were reasonable. We later stopped at several booths and shops to check out everything from local souvenirs to a display of specialty cheeses.
The Dallas Farmer's Market is a fantastic place for a family outing, date night, hangout time with friends or a simple trip to buy local produce. I will definitely be visiting again! One thing to remember - get there early because parking gets tight later in the day and on weekends!
