Went to Fair Park in August 2008 and spent two days seeing almost everything it had to offer. We just love museums, and didn't have any children in tow, so we were able to wander at a leisurely pace. There were a lot of buildings there that are only open and used during the State Fair, so a good bit of the Park was empty. The grounds, however, are nice and well kept.
Our favorite was the Texas Hall of State - we were the first ones in that day and the gentleman at the desk was able to give us an almost private tour, complete with the little "extra" information and stories that went along with so many of the displays. He was a former history teacher so he made it all very special. We enjoyed it immensely, despite the fact that a good bit of the display items had been temporarily removed for the TX State Fair display.
The Aquarium at Fair Park is rather small, so don't go comparing it to the big one downtown. It is still nice and well presented. The newer of the two Nature & Science Museums buildings (where the IMAX theater is) is geared more towards hands-on for children than the older/original one.
The Railroad Museum is sadly in need of funding in order to restore some of these old beauties. It is interesting to wander among the engines and railcars - sometimes you don't realize how big those powerhouses were!
The African-American Museum seems fairly new, so there wasn't a lot in it. What was there was interesting and nice, and the building itself was striking. We didn't make it into the Women's Museum or the Texas Discovery Gardens building (we did get to wander through the gorgeous gardens, however). We saved the Planetarium shows for the heat of the day so we could be inside in the AC at that time!
We ate at the Old Mill Inn Restaurant there on-site for lunch both days, and it was tasty and reasonably priced. The staff went over and above to take care of us. Some of the patrons there had come to Fair Park just for the restaurant if that tells you anything!
Yes, we would go back next time we are in Dallas, if nothing else than to see the remainder of the Texas Hall of State collection.

I live in Dallas. Fair Park is a fine place to go if you have a reason to be going there- such as a concert or the State Fair. I can't say I'd just go wander around there for the heck of it. It's really not a very nice neighborhood surrounding it. However, the park is pretty much enclosed- so as long as you park in the lots by the gates you should be fine.

Miserable area. Unfortunatly there are many concert, theatre and sporting events that take place in this area so you have to go here or you'll miss out. Find a hotel in the Turtle Creek area and secure armored transport to get you back safely.

For anyone who appreciates Art Deco, Fair Park in Dallas cannot be beaten. Entering at Parry St. the original Lone Star pylon (minus the ticket booths) beckons visitors still. To the left is the old administrative building, now beautifully restored as the Women's Museum. To the right is the old General Motors pavilion, now a theater. Straight ahead is the esplanade, a thousand foot long lagoon. On the left is the Centennial Building. To the right is the Automobile Building. Each have nearly identical facades, with three projecting porticos and huge art deco statues representing the six flags over Texas.Under the porticos and between them are restored murals in pure art deco. At the far end of the esplanade is a huge plaza and the Texas Hall of State. The center of the HOS has a tall facade of white colums and blue tiles and a gilded statue. Inside the main hall is flanked by two huge art deco murals of the history of Texas from the conquistodors to 1936. To the right of the HOS is the former US pavilion with a tall gilded tower.Further in the park is a small lake with the art deco aquarium, science museum, natural history museum, and band shell.Other buildings are the Food and Fiber Building, the Embarcadero, the Cotton Bowl, and livestock buildings all done in art deco style. The African American Museum is modern, but built on the site of the 1936 Hall of Negro Life.
Even though you can see the modern skyline of Dallas in the distance, walking through Fair Park is like going back in time. Here it is easy to believe it is still 1936.Don't go on a Monday as most things are closed. I was there in July and there seemed to be quite a few people enjoying the park, although it is reputedly in a "bad" part of the city. Entry to the park is free and there was plenty of free parking available too. A great place to experience the total art deco feeling.
