Went to Fair Park in August 2008 and spent two days seeing almost everything it had to offer. We just love museums, and didn't have any children in tow, so we were able to wander at a leisurely pace. There were a lot of buildings there that are only open and used during the State Fair, so a good bit of the Park was empty. The grounds, however, are nice and well kept.
Our favorite was the Texas Hall of State - we were the first ones in that day and the gentleman at the desk was able to give us an almost private tour, complete with the little "extra" information and stories that went along with so many of the displays. He was a former history teacher so he made it all very special. We enjoyed it immensely, despite the fact that a good bit of the display items had been temporarily removed for the TX State Fair display.
The Aquarium at Fair Park is rather small, so don't go comparing it to the big one downtown. It is still nice and well presented. The newer of the two Nature & Science Museums buildings (where the IMAX theater is) is geared more towards hands-on for children than the older/original one.
The Railroad Museum is sadly in need of funding in order to restore some of these old beauties. It is interesting to wander among the engines and railcars - sometimes you don't realize how big those powerhouses were!
The African-American Museum seems fairly new, so there wasn't a lot in it. What was there was interesting and nice, and the building itself was striking. We didn't make it into the Women's Museum or the Texas Discovery Gardens building (we did get to wander through the gorgeous gardens, however). We saved the Planetarium shows for the heat of the day so we could be inside in the AC at that time!
We ate at the Old Mill Inn Restaurant there on-site for lunch both days, and it was tasty and reasonably priced. The staff went over and above to take care of us. Some of the patrons there had come to Fair Park just for the restaurant if that tells you anything!
Yes, we would go back next time we are in Dallas, if nothing else than to see the remainder of the Texas Hall of State collection.
