“Sept 2013 visit to Adolphus”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

As before, one of our main goals for visiting the Adlophus, was to enjoy the beauty and quite of the lobby. The location of the hotel made it convenient to visit two excellent restuarants, as weel as do some shopping Saturday. We arrived Friday evening, enjoyed the lobby before we ate at out. We again enjoyed the lobby incuding the new bar area after dinner later Friday. Saturday we had lunch out of the hotel, shopped and came back to again enjoy the quite and elegance of the lobby before dining out. After dinner we one last time spent time in the lobby. You will notice the lobby is a reocurring theme in our visits to the Adolphus. We love its elegance and ambiance. One had breakfast in the Bistro Sunday morning, prior to checking out. As always, all services, staff, and emenities of the hotel were excellent plus.

Room Tip: Any room we have ever had as been excellent.

Pros: Great location if you’re doing business downtown. Directly across street from AT&T HQ. Also walking distance to Sixth Floor and other museums. In street behind the hotel (Elm) there are number of bars, some noisy and crowded, others quiet and mellow … so you’ve got a choice depending on what you’re looking for. Beautiful wood-panel and brass lobby. Friendly, helpful staff. Large room with marble in bathroom, decent wallpaper, newish carpet. My room was very quiet – no noise from neighboring rooms, very little from hallway.

Cons: In my guestroom there was no safe, no alarm clock, no pens or paper to take notes. Paint peeling from bathroom ceiling. Dim, inadequate lighting in walk-in closet. Scuffs and chips in some of the room furniture, such as end table and ancient built-in chest of drawers in closet. Filthy windows, but my room was interior facing so all there was to see outside the windows was a brick wall. A colleague requested and got a street-facing room with cleaner windows. I stayed there in the summer when it was 95+ degrees outside. It would have been nice to have bottles of water in the room, either complimentary or for purchase. So be sure to get water from the 7-11 next store and put it in the room’s otherwise empty fridge.

The hotel is beautiful, our room was a huge suite, the AC worked wonderully. The bartender Cosme was very customer oriented and the piano and bass music well done. We were not enticed by the dining choices or costs offered. The concierge also only suggests a few restaurants which were not appealing; only a limited type of menu. Most staff I encountered during check in, coming in and out of the hotel and upon check out were not very friendly or customer service oriented. My husband and I sat in the lounge area directly across from the bar and no one checked if we wanted a drink or anything. I finally walked to the bar and waited until the one bartender was available. Seems location creates a very poor valet drop off and pick up situation. At one time we waited in line on the street approximately 15 minutes to return to the hotel and cars were lined up behind us as well. The process to get your car from valet for either an in town trip or after check out was not pleasant. I am baffled why the custome has to go outside to the valet window to present their ticket rather than being able to call from the room and be given an approximate wait time. As we and other guests waited at the end of a ramp in the garage there was no place to sit, be out of the elements and away from the exhaust fumes. The overall experience was not the best. No pool or spa I guess is due to the location and limitations when renovations were done. Poor indication of where downstairs restrooms are located and poor indication of room numbers in the halls were a surprise also.

The hotel is fitted out in an older style, but has bags of character, it is quite busy during the day with conferences & training sessions etc.
The rooms are spacious - ask for one with big windows for more natural light.

The Walt Garrison Rodeo Bar & Grill, situated on the corner of the hotel on Commerce & Akard; was our favourite watering hole & did great food - try the Texas Chilli !
Brian is a great barman & kept us well watered & entertained.
A great bar in a town that gets quiet at sundown. A bit of a life-saver to be honest.

If you want to do some travelling around (Fort Worth / Dallas Cowboys Stadium / Malls etc, etc) get a hire car - a the taxi costs are very high & they have lots of surcharges - felt ripped off actually. The DART public transport system is limited to the suburbs & not that useful to visitors at all.
I do recommend the Dallas Segway Tour… very good indeed.

Room Tip: ask for one with big windows for more natural light.

Stayed at the Adolphus Hotel in September 2013 with my lady. The lobby of the hotel is hands down the best lobby, it is outstanding. The staff was helpful but slightly on the mechanical/get through the day feel vs. connecting with the guest feel. The room was huge, (we had the luxury suite) and it was very clean. I did find it odd that there were no robes and slippers for this level of hotel, I expected it but oh well. Valet service was fast and well run. We visit Dallas from time to time and stay at different luxury hotels when we pass through. This hotel is good and beautiful, but it can be better.

My husband and I wanted to get away in the city and enjoy all the nightlife of downtown. The Arts District is only a short distance away for the theatre and symphony. The Adolphus was in the best location to walk to restaurants on Main Street. We checked in and were greeted by Phil Johnson, what a great first impression. Aaron checked us in and made us feel like royalty. Our guestroom was large and had all the comforts of home. While the hotel does need some updating, I understand they are going to invest about $50 million in 2014. WOW! I can't wait to come back. The service from the moment we stepped into this historic hotel, to room service, which has to be the best I have ever experienced. The food was outstanding and the presentation was also. The lobby bar area was hopping with jazz entertainment and then we found the Rodeo Bar for a more casual late night cap.

Room Tip: I was in the guestroom that ended with 03, which I understand is an Executive suite. I was told they...

Dear Guest,

It is always a pleasure to read a balanced and fair review. Thank you.

Phillip Johnson is so pleased that he impressed you with his service. Anyone who has ever met him has found a friend for life. He never forgets a friendship and amazes guests, night after night.

You are most kind to include our restaurants and room service in your praise.

We do hope you return often and enjoy the amenities of our home.

Warmest regards,

David
