5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

The Adolphus Hotel in downtown Dallas is a superb choice, if you need a place to stay while visiting this great city!
From grand building structure, to the exquisite interior decor, this hotel sure stands out from the others.

PROS: Beautiful lobby area. Very quiet room. Comfortable bed. Check out the Dallas World Aquarium/Zoo!
CONS: Found a little bag of drugs inside of the hotel book shortly after arriving to our room which we turned into the check-in desk. Set thermostat to lowest setting and still never got cool. Poor view from windows. Foul odor on the 21st floor. $20/day for parking. Have to call and wait for ice. Restaurants a little pricey and not all that good (Didn't try French Room.)
Not the fault of the hotel, but anytime you leave this hotel and walk in the area prepared to get barraged by panhandlers.
I guess if you had something going on within walking distance to this hotel, it might be worth staying here, but I'll probably be looking for somewhere else next time I return to Dallas.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your compliments.

We apologize, though, that we disappointed you in other ways. Try as we might, we sometimes get it wrong and fail to impress. With 400 guest rooms, it is bound to happen. We do our best, make amends, and recover as quickly as humanly possible.

Rest assured, your comments are used to make repairs and address any issues, if we have not already discovered them.

It would be unfair to describe downtown as overrun with panhandlers. The situation is no worse than any other major metropolis - and probably far better.

Our management and staff are grateful for your business and hope you will give us another chance to shine.

Very sincerely,

David

Pros:
- Good location
- Nice lobby
- Most of the staff was nice
- Nice rooms if you can get one with a view
- Quiet
- Good restaurants and bars
- Nice workout room
Cons:
- NO PARKING!!!! Only valet at $28 per day.
- Rude valet attendants
- All the Elevator safety inspections 3+ months expired.
- No Pool
- No free wifi
- Lots of stairs
- You cannot stay in the part of the hotel they show in the photo (the 1912 bld), you can only stay in the 1970's addition to the side.
- They tried to charge us $84 for parking one night ( $28 twice on the bill and once when we went to pick up car.)

Room Tip: Get a room as high up as possible.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your comments. We appreciate your kind compliments and value your feedback (it is read by all of our staff and used for training purposes).

One can stay in the original 1912 building; we have many guestrooms and suites in that section. The hotel additions were not built in the 1970s; they were added over time, starting in the 1920s. There are elevators and escalators, as well as stairs.

We apologize for any errors on your bill. They were not intentional.

Kind regards,

David

I don't want this hotel to change a thing as long as the mattresses are new, rooms are clean... And they are! It's a grande piece of architecture built during the Titanic period. Walk off the streets of Downtown Dallas into Downton Abbey and a different era, where a pianist is playing Canon in D Major, ladies and gentlemen are enjoying afternoon tea or having a cocktails at the classic bar. The decor is grande dark mahogany , however this all captures the essence of the period and there are wonderful skylights above the main lobby with wonderful light beaming in so the lighting is all very natural and furniture is authentic. There are so many seating areas in every nook and cranny to enjoy a good book or quiet conversation. Everywhere you look there is a classic oil painting, a photo of Queen Elizabeth and grand stairway in the original lobby. Know that this hotel originated with one red brick tower on the East side and I always ask for a room on this side, I'm sure they're smaller but I like that. I have stayed in the suite and it is very nice and spacious. The staff is second to none and will go out of their way to accommodate your needs in giving you the room you want and if they can they are also good about late check out. There are 2 restaurants one being the most famous in Dallas, and nationally renown 5 star French room, it looks much like restaurant at the Musee d' Orsay, in Paris, but coat and tie is required and of course food is not at all the Same( much better and of course formal). Then there is the cozy Bistro open for breakfast and lunch, food outstanding. And of course the Afternoon Tea in which you'll want to make a reservation. There are many beautiful rooms for conferences, parties and weddings. Check out the website for updated specials, the ADOLPHUS is always featuring great specials for the hotel and restaurants so everyone can enjoy. Although I live in the Dallas area, I sometimes go to the hotel when I need a break. I've always been pleased with the rooms and always sleep well there and feel once I step into the place I'm in Paris or London without the flight. If you want hip and loud this may not be for you. However a little step back in time and some culture is pretty hip to me!!!!

Room Tip: The newer part of hotel doesn't match the original East Tower, and the newer facade is a bit fun...

Dear Guest,

How very kind of you to take the time to give other travelers a virtual walk through The Adolphus.

Many people do consider The Adolphus the Downton Abbey of Dallas, and we are delighted with the comparison. We are all avid fans of the series.

Thank you for your kind words and high praise. It means the world to our staff to know that you are always pleased with your stays.

Best regards,

David

From the large, gorgeously appointed rooms to the timelessly elegant lobby, this hotel is a step back in time in the very best sense of that phrase. The staff is delightful, helpful and accommodating. The room is beautiful and VERY clean. Our view out onto the street was glorious and it was so nice to be able to open the door! This hotel can obviously handle anything from volleyball teams to wedding receptions to bachelorette parties - all were underway while we were there. I would stay here again and again.

Room Tip: Room 818 is at the very end of the hall and very quiet.

Upon arrival we were quite pleased with general appearance of the reception area. This sense of grandeur quickly left us as we passed broke glass on the pictures on the way up to the elevators. Once we got to our room, we opened to curtains only to find a dismal view of a roof top littered in air conditioning units. I would have understood this room placement if the hotel was busy but it was empty. The room had dirty sheets so we called down to reception and requested a new room. They sent us to a "complimentary" upgraded room only to find a hair ball in the shower. There were used drink coasters wedged into the couch cushion and the carpets hasn't been vacuumed.

We prepaid two days for the accommodation and we left 1hr into our stay. We offered to pay for the first night and have second night refunded. They denied the request and failed to comprise.

Please seek out alternate accommodation if you want to enjoy your stay.

I recently attended a convention in Dallas and had to find lodgings. I was fortunate to stay at the Adolphus. I stayed on the 9th floor in the older section of the hotel. The room was spacious and clean, the bathroom was fine though when I first saw it, I was surprised that the tub and toilet were dated– brown ceramic and the fixtures were brass, but everything was fine.
The first day the toilet didn't flush and I called the concierge. I had housekeeping come by almost immediately and fix the problem. For the five days I stayed there, I had no problems.

The Breakfast room is convenient and the breakfasts are large, hearty and good. They know how to make coffee. The bar is a good place for a night cap. I met a friend for drinks and we ended up having an appetizer–sliders. the would have been good, but either the bartender got busy and forgot to serve them on time, or they came to us cold. However the Uncle Tito Martini was spot on!

GOOD WIFI. Now I had some work to do, so I went to the mezzanine, that in-between floor, and got 4 solid hours of work done! The secret is to buy the wifi package. then you can take your laptop everywhere in the hotel and get reception. I prefer the mezzanine.

Adolphus is an elegant place to stay, I highly recommend it. I had a discount from the convention, so it was definitely worth it for me price-wise.

Room Tip: I had room 1013 2 queen size beds with comfortable pillow and a view on the street. No complaints...
