I stayed at the Joule a year ago and was highly impressed with the property. At the time, they were undergoing renovation (they still are, but it is winding down), but the hotel still struck me as beautiful, chic, and elegantly modern. Last week, I went to Dallas for a quick birthday getaway and immediately selected The Joule, as I'd heard their renovation was almost completed and I was eager to check it out. I was not disappointed. From the lovely lobby (a must-see for those who appreciate mid-century modern design as much as I do!) to the Taschen store, MOMA-esque gift shop and clothing boutique, the new Joule was a delight to behold. I stayed in suite 515 and was pleasantly surprised to find that I had a guest powder room in addition to the full bathroom in the bedroom. This made it very convenient for my guests. The bed was comfortable and the suite was well-appointed with stylish accessories (Taschen books!) and plenty of seating for guests. I should note, however, that my suite looked out on Main Street, and while during the week, this isn't an issue, on a weekend evening it can get a bit noisy outside as the surrounding bars begin to empty (frat boys, $30,000 millionaires, and alcohol are a volatile mix at 2 a.m.). It wasn't an issue for me, but if you retire early or are a light sleeper, you might bear this in mind when booking a low floor overlooking Main Street.
For the most part, service in the hotel was exceptional. Blanca checked me in and provided the smiling, warm service I've come to expect of a high-end hotel. She even worked with her manager to book me for an extra night at a much-reduced rate because it was my birthday! Suffice it to say, she was a "joule." The doorman (and I regret forgetting his name, but he was there when I checked in on Wednesday and also when I checked out on Saturday morning) was terrific. He was warm and personable, and seemed to enjoy and take pride in his job--the very hallmark of the profession. The hostess in the Charlie Palmer was fantastic, as was the server who went out of her way to get me a cup of apple cider vinegar on Thursday morning. In fact, most everyone on staff I interacted with was friendly and welcoming, from the bartenders to the valet parkers, from the retail staff to the pool staff. Even the construction staff I saw from time to time took a moment to smile and say hello. The only exception was the grumpy young woman in the coffee shop on Saturday morning. The two men working were wonderful, but she offered no smile or hello. In fact, the only thing she said to me was, "Here you go" when she finished making my coffee. I have an issue with this type of begrudging customer service in general, but in a five-star hotel, even more so.
Lastly, the ONLY reason I did not give The Joule five stars is because I felt that housekeeping service runs too late. On Thursday, I was out all day and when I returned to my room around 4:00, housekeeping still had not been through. I was having guests around 4:30, so it was unacceptable. As soon as I called, however, they promptly sent someone up (although I had to entertain my guests in the bar until housekeeping was finished). The next day, I went to the pool until about 2:00 and when I returned, my room still had not been cleaned. This time, it wasn't as much of an issue, as I was headed out around 4:00 and needed to shower and get dressed, but it still would have been nice if they had attended to the room sooner.
All in all, great job Joule. I will definitely return!
