“This place Sucks!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012 via mobile

It's old and run down. Rooms are small and smell old. Bathroom is small and tub is stained. Had to climb 9 flights of stairs to get to the room. You have to park your car a mile away and pay for parking. When ask if we could get out and go somewhere else told sure but you will be charged full amount. This place is a dump!

Attended a conference at Hyatt but didn't want to stay there (hermetically sealed glass tower). Being able to open windows is what originally attracted me to the Lawrence but that turned out to not be true in my room. Still, the lobby is old world with milk and cookies in the evening, the elevator is a major player in your stay as it takes forever but offers opportunities for conversation, and rooms clean and comfortable. Corner rooms are spacious but cost a little extra. NW corner and all rooms facing north give a view of the Dallas book depository and JFK Sixth Floor Museum (a 5 minute walk away). Not many restaurants close by but a few blocks down Main St. offers a lot of choices. Free breakfast is nice to have: waffles, biscuits & gravy, boiled eggs, etc. If you are tired of the big chains that could be located in any city in the world, the Lawrence is a good (and cheaper by far) alternative. Staff were helpful any time I needed assistance. Free wifi in your room also nice.

Room Tip: NW corner room and any facing north offer view of Book Depository.

Because of "Sandy" we got off the train at Dallas. We had not been there before. Across the street from the train station we saw the Hotel Lawrence so we tried it. The people at the front desk were great and got us a room without a problem. I called because I couldn't get the television to work and someone came immediately and found the problem. Breakfast was very good. If we ever stay in Dallas again we will stay here. It is close to historic sites.

Hotel Lawrence is such an easy place to just be comfortable and be yourself. It's close to historic sites. It has a free shuttle service that will drop you off an pick you up, so you don't have to rent a car (or worry about drinking & driving). It's within walking distance of the Amtrak train station, local & regional rail service, and buses -- you can get everywhere from here! The hotel is not super fancy. Although sometimes called a "luxury" hotel, it's probably best to think of that as "luxury for the 1920s," which is when the hotel was built. We found the place to be quite comfortable and really enjoyed our stay. The free breakfast offered a wide variety of choices, and the fresh baked cookies & milk in the lobby at bedtime were a sweet gesture. My only criticism is that the cookies were cooked a bit too long for my taste -- I think most people like a *soft* warm chocolate chip cookie, not a hard one. ;)

Room Tip: Honestly, I think most rooms have a good view -- rooms facing north have a view of historic sites, r...

Stayed here at a congress a few weeks ago. On the positive side the hotel is very close to the Dallas convention centre and the staff should to be complemented for their friendliness.

HOWEVER, this is not a particularly nice building. Not sure when the hotel was built but not sure it's had a refit since President Kennedy met his end (the exact spot where he was shot is 2min walk from the hotel).

The hotel is falling to bits, carpets stained, room and bathroom fittings rusting and cracked, aircon looks like reclaimed machine (and very very noisy!), basically it's not a very pleasant place. I would have moved hotel was it not for the fast I was too jet-lagged and other hotel options too expensive.

My advice would be to book a different hotel earlier.

Room Tip: Tip would be to choose a different hotel...

This property is located on the SW corner of downtown, and best serves the Federal Courthouse, Union Station, and A H Belo (The Dallas Morning News). It was built in 1925, and everything you will see inside is indicative of that. The rooms are adequately furnished with nice furniture and beds, fresh paint, and they have done the bathrooms with the newest and most modern trendy fixtures and apparatus. But, typical of buildings of this age, everything is small. The rooms are small, and the bathrooms are particularly lacking, and in renovating it there's little that could be done to remedy this. It's a reinforced concrete building, which gives an added level of fire safety, but you're stuck with where the walls are until the end. There's no room for more than one person to get ready at the same time, and there's no dressing table with a sink for the ladies. For the Mrs to be putting on her makeup while the Mr takes a shower would be a juggling act. The heating and cooling is central, controlled by thermostat, and worked perfectly, however they do offer you the privilege of opening a window, if you really want to jump out. Most rooms are just under $100, and for what you get the value is fair considering it's a downtown address. I probably won't be back because I live in the area, and it makes no sense to spend money on that, but I can't say I had a bad experience, or felt ripped off on any particular part of the room. It's good enough for what it does, but calling it a luxury hotel is stretching the truth just a bit far.

Room Tip: It has a in-house restaurant and bar, and I never darkened their door. Dallas' parking mafia is...

Rooms were extrememly small and the bathrooms were cramped.
Shower was horrible - Was either scalding hot or freezing cold, no inbetween.
We were forced to leave our keys at the front desk. Not a huge deal, but somewhat annoying to ask for keys everytime we needed into the car.
Pictures were very deceiving - the place looked run down.
No parking near-by and we had to pay $15/day for 4 days (Thurs-Mon) when we checked in late on Thursday and left early on Monday. We were not told that we had to pay for parking until we arrived.
Hotel staff was extremely unfriendly.

I would not recommend the hotel to anyone!!

Room Tip: Don't get a room here
