We had a great long weekend at the Lumen. The people who work here are so nice and friendly. The front desk people are really helpful and the valet guys were so pleasant. We enjoyed breakfast, the food was really good. The service was a little slow but we didn't mind because we were just enjoying a leisurely breakfast. We sat around the pool and had drinks one night-very relaxing! The lobby is a lot of fun-coffee and tea in the morning and wine in the afternoon and always a lot of dogs hanging out. Our rom was comfortable, clean and quiet. Great hotel for a laid back weekend.

Frankly, this is a tough one. Hotel Lumen is giving it a try and they score well in several areas. Their staff is friendly and polished without being snooty. The hotel is unique, with various sitting and mingling spots, including a very nice pool, a rooftop venue, and a pleasant lobby. The restaurant isn't just a typical hotel restaurant - it's actually a destination point for many locals. The food was good with a lovely presentation, the staff was great, albeit slow at times. Our room was average, however, and had a rather bizarre floorplan, with a glass shower completely open to the sleeping area. There was a curtain that could be drawn, but the layout isn't for the modest guest. That didn't bother me as much as the fact that the sink was part of the sleeping area. Picture the Embassy Suites rooms, and dial it up a notch. However, at least Embassy Suites offers more than a flimsy wooden slider door for the john. The bed was extremely comfy and the pillows are a perfect choice. The Lumen staff is very nice, but there are not enough people manning the front desk at check-in and check-out times, making for lengthy waits to get in and out, and a lot of "Thank you for your patience" comments to help smooth ruffled feathers. I think of my 4 hotels in town, ZaZa, Palomar, Mansion at Turtle Creek, and now The Lumen, this is #4. Pricing is also lower than the others, so there you go -- back to the "you get what you pay for" philosophy. I wouldn't rule out The Lumen, but the quirky look drifts into the quirky rooms and a quirky stay. I honestly cannot say whether I'll be back in a pinch, and I'm not saying you shouldn't give it a go. They make vanilla and chocolate ice cream for a reason. You may enjoy your stay more than I did.

Room Tip: Ask for a private, separate bath, if available.

We recently took a quick weekend away in Dallas, and stayed at the Lumen on a recommendation from a friend. It had a cool, Hollywood Hills in the 60s vibe. The glass lobby and bar surrounds the pool and is stylishly decorated. Drinks from the bar were great.

Beware that there are rooms without windows here - I mistakenly booked one. Mine was called the "King Room" and I don't recall that the website designated that it was an interior room with no window to outside. That was pretty odd and caused me to lose some points with my fiance.

Otherwise, the bed and linens were good, it was clean and quiet, and the location was good.

Very very cool local find. Great service. For example, I was in bar and asked hostess if they ha an iPhone charger cord as I forgot mine. They did not have an extra one so she went to her car and got her personal one and loaned it to me while I was there. Great place.

Great proximity to SMU. Excellent valets out front - they do an excellent job! Otherwise, this hotel is bare bones basic decor-wise and with mostly poor service. It's the most uncomfortable Kimpton I've ever stayed at. The front desk is not very friendly upon check-in and the service in the restaurant is absolutely deplorable. For breakfast, I can get far better service in a diner. Why should it take 10 minutes to get coffee? The food is decent and the menu rather interesting but the service is slow and inattentive. The big wide tables are silly because during a busy time it is so noisy in this acoustically challenged space that you have to shout to be heard. The guest room amenities are spartan...exactly 2 towels, no shower caps and exactly 2 glasses. That's fine, but we booked the room for 3 and had to start making calls as soon as we checked in for more of everything. The hideous leopard robes are scary ugly. "Yoga mats in every room" is prominently advertised but I never saw one on either visit. Too bad, I could have used one because it's so stressful to stay here.

Room Tip: Street side is noisy.
