If you're in the mood for something unusual, off-the-beaten path, and a lot more interesting than boring fast food give this a try. The Bakery is famous for their fruitcake, but their side-line sandwich restaurant and bakery-goods-to-go are complementary and worth the visit. The restrooms are clean too! Make your deli sandwich choice first however, since the sandwiches are made to order and they take time to make. This is not your streamlined fast-food place, so expect to wait awhile as you view and sample their bakery goods. Look for 10 cent coffee in the small interior dining room....or enjoy the patio out front. The current unfortunate drawback is that the street directly in front of this original Bakery site is under construction in a big way. Hopefully the street repairs will be made quickly and will afford more ease of access to those looking for the place. Current street repairs make the street access difficult, very narrow and back up traffic to the factory site.
Best cookie for me is the Pecan Nugget...which tastes like the middle of your grandmother's pecan pie! VERY good. Order lunch...and afterward take a few goodies with you on the road.
I love the bread choices when you order a sandwich...get something unusual, I really enjoyed the dill bread with my chicken salad sandwich. They will toast the bread if you ask them to do so.
The space is small and tight but the unusual-ness of the place is worth a visit. Nice people behind the counter, ask them what THEIR favorite is and you'll hear lots of advice! Pick up a T-shirt while you're there too! Your grandmother will know about this place...their fruitcake is world famous and they've shipped world-wide for many years! Fun memorabilia in their dining room.
