I best remember the Howard Johnson brand from restaurants and motor lodges in the 1960's. They were good for ice cream as I recall. If you want the 1960's roadside motor lodge experience - without the ice cream - then this is the place for you. It would appear that the rooms have not been updated in decades. The sink area was incredibly small - I could bump my elbows on both walls simultaneously while shaving. The air conditioner was noisy - and of course was turned off when I arrived to a room with about an 80 degree temperature. The shower head was loose, but did work. The bed mattress was best described as extremely firm. That may even be an understatement. Oddly, there were doors to the room on both sides - to a courtyard, and to a parking lot.
There was complimentary wi-fi, but a circa 10 digit code, and I was only in the room for six hours, so did not use it. There is a complimentary breakfast set out in the smallish lobby area, but one of the two cereal dispensers did not work. If you have any other choices in the Bryan - College Station area, consider those first. The reason I stayed at this hotel was a late night arrival in College Station and a need for an early departure to Houston. The hotel is conveniently located on the South Highway Six frontage road. The rate was also attractive - with taxes and an AAA rate, I paid $57, but I got what I paid for.
All of this would be bad enough, but the check in experience was inexcusably poor. I excluded this from the rating, except for the service which I wish I could rate a zero. I arrived at the hotel at 11:55 pm. At 11:45 pm, the hotel desk clerk called my home and woke up my wife to see if I was going to check in that night. Lesson learned: always register with your cell phone, not your home phone. But this is completely unacceptable behavior. I noted this on a survey I received from the hotel chain after my visit, but have received no follow up. Once I did arrive, I was treated indifferently and the clerk was more interested in training a new employee than helping me. Again, calling my home - when I had guaranteed my room with a credit card - is completely unacceptable. Treating me indifferently and not apologizing for waking my wife is also unacceptable.
