“Simply Fantastic! But.........”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

My wife and I stayed at The Black Swan for 4 nights in mid July. Everything about the place is fantastic. Great location, lovely room, delicious food. Everything that anyone could want in a hotel for a short stay in the Yorkshire Dales.

We did several lovely local walks and visited lots of places around the area. The Druid's Temple is a bit spooky. Lots of lovely villages and towns are also within a short drive from the hotel. We got the 159 bus from Masham to Ripon and then onto the 36 for a short journey into Harrogate.

The Nidderdale museum and craftworks in Pately Bridge are both well worth a visit. As is the shopping mall at Lightwater Valley.

The brewery tour at the Black Sheep brewery in Masham is very good as well. We sampled a few of the ales there! One is even as high as 8.9%!

The one and only issue during our stay, was the owner of the Black Swan. He's done extremely well in getting everything in tip top order at the hotel. But, I would suggest that he gets his act together on his attitude to customer's. Don't get me wrong, he would answer any question raised quite politely. But getting him to acknowledge any customer's in the morning is like pulling teeth!

Having said that, I would not hesitate to recommend the Black Swan to friends, family and anyone that asks.

We stayed on a 3 night Internet offer, making it a good deal, due to availabilty we had to upgrade to get the dates we wanted but worth it. The room large with plenty of space, the bed comfy and huge! The room and bathroom very clean. The pub was cozy and nicely done out, with a nice patio with good views. The breakfast was very good, qualtiy products and large! All staff were friendly and helpful. The pub had a good choice of beers and a varied menu.

We are just checking out of this b&b and had a lovely time. We got the room on a kgb deal for b&b and we stayed for an evening meal on both nights. The room was really nice, pillows a little uncomfortable however i am quite picky and will just take my own in future. The setting was so peaceful, even though it was a caravan park and there are places to sit outside and enjoy a drink overlooking the countryside.

The food on the first night could have been a little better (lasagne was a bit dry) however on the second night the steak and ale pie was lovely. Some prices are a bit expensive for what is a pub setting however there was also food on the menu at pub prices too.

Nosterfield Nature Reserve just outside of West Tanfield is worth a visit.

Overall a lovely friendly pub and b&b and we will look to return in the future.

Just enquired about booking 4 rooms here and asked if there would be the possiblility of a deal which I didn't think was too unreasonable. Well the response I got back was so rude that I definately won't be staying here now. I had assumed it was just a member of staff that responded but looking on here it seems it was actually the manager. Very dissapointing for a hotel that seems to look so nice.

Had a 2 night kgb deal which turned out to be great value . Room was fine - roomy ,clean and a nice bathroom. We ate in the restaurant both nights and were very happy our meals , good choices and well prepared. The Black Swan is in a quiet village though I assume things would be busier during school holidays as there are around 30 caravans at the back of the pub. With lots of walks in the area a great place to stay for a relaxing break.
