“Exceeded expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

I went to the museum not expecting much. I learned a lot about prehistoric bell county with their amazing collection of prehistoric artifacts. The part of the museum talking about the different decades, I learned a lot of how Bell County tied into Texas history and beyond. I learned some things about the early days of Ft Hood that I never knew, with artifacts from the beginning of Camp Hood, and how all the communties around the area helped to support their early beginnings. The rare arifacts they have on display was way beyond anything I thought would be there, coming from a museum that is free.

“Sleepy local museum with knock-your-socks-off archeology”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2012

From the outside, this looks like a better-than-average small town museum with a collection of old teacups and newspapers. But inside (and in the field), this becomes one of the premier archeology museums. Since they partnered with the Gault School of Archeological Research to sponsor tours of the nearby Gault Site, Bell County Museum has become a must see for students of Clovis and pre-Clovis Culture (13,500 years old). The Gault Site has so far produced over 2 million artifacts and has extended the knowledge of early man in America by 1000 years.
For the free museum itself, allow 1 hour. Four stars and an exclamation point.
Site tours are held about once every 3 months (see website) at a cost of $10. Allow 4 hours. This rates five stars with an exclamation point.
