This restaurant is unique in the area for both its food and ambience. The restaurant choices in the Bastrop area tend to be limited in terms of quality, variety and particularly the overall feeling or ambience of the place. The Bastrop Brewhouse is a very welcome addition because it has an ambience and menu not found in other restaurants in the area.
In Europe you would call the restaurant a gastro pub. The menu is broad with even common dishes having a twist. The portions are generally fairly large and in some cases enough for two (beer battered cod and chips, for example). The prices are higher than other places in town and will strike locals as high but are fair relative to the quality and quantity. I have eaten here several times and did not review the restaurant when it first openned about a year ago. The restaurant had a very rough start-up but the kitchen seems to have settled in. I am not a beer drinker and therefore will not comment on the brewery/beers. I will say that unlike some brewery type restaurants you cannot see any of the brewery hardware as it is housed in a separate building. I have heard from others that the restaurant's beers are good but they cannot brew them fast enough to meet demand.
Staffing is still somewhat of an issue. The restaurant is very large; in addition to a large interior space, it has an enourmous exterior seating area spread over 4-5 decks on multiple levels (restaurant built on a hillside/bank of the Colorado river). The restaurant also books local bands and has other events some fairly unusual like midget wrestling. On a good weather day, on a weekend, with a band playing you could see 250-350 customers in the place. However, on a typical week day for lunch or an early dinner 15-20 customers is more likely. This means that sometimes the wait staff is large, generally young and inexperienced and on other occasions two or three very experienced servers are very attentive.
