This is a review of the 6 1/2 mile paddling trip down the Colorado river in Bastrop. This company offers longer expeditions as well, and also does cycling trips and bicycle repairs.
We were given 3 hours of time, and met at the gear store on the outskirts of downtown Bastrop. We were then given our life vests, a dry bag (plastic bag to keep stuff dry), and a safety briefing. Bathrooms are also available there. Water and other drinks were available for purchase and were reasonably priced. They loaded up the kayaks and drove us a short distance to launch. On the way to the launch, we drove through the historic district of Bastrop and got an amusing narrated tour from our driver.
We traversed the course with little difficulty. The water is very shallow in some places (1-2 feet) and in most places you can stand. Our kayak never flipped. We had to paddle most of the way, as there wasn't a whole lot of current to keep us moving forward.
But it was very relaxing! We saw lots of birds and dragonflies that I would not have noticed from land.
You must bring a cell phone with you, as you need to call the store to come pick you up. After the pick up, we were driven back to the store to get back to our car. We also saw much of the damage from the fall wildfires on the return drive. We were starving after all the paddling we did, and fortunately there are good places to eat in Bastrop.
The owner told us that his business was devastated by the fires (few people wanted to visit and lots of people left), so it seemed good to support a small local business.
Some final tips:
-Bring your cell phone so you can call for pick up.
-Bring some snacks with you in case you get hungry on the river.
-Wear a swimsuit and water shoes for the paddling, and bring some clothes to change into if you are staying in town. Your feet will be gross from the river mud when you get in and out of the kayak!
