This is our first time in St. Kitts, and heard from a few taxi drivers and staff members at the Marriott (where we are staying in a gorgeous 2br villa) that we needed to check out Spice Mill...boy, are we glad we did! What an amazing meal!
My husband and I were surprised to find that there were only 2 other people dining there tonight upon our arrival, but then again it is a 30 minute pot-hole ridden ride up the hills from the resort! In fact, our taxi driver (whose name is "Star Shield...." yes, we died laughing throughout dinner about his awesome name) stayed and waited for us because it's so far away. We were impressed right away...the atmosphere is island-chic. Very breezy yet modern, and situated under the sparkling night sky, with a killer view. We were immediately greeted by the manager, who was very friendly and attentive to our needs as first-timers to St. Kitts.
After munching on the delicious scallion bread with housemade hummus, we ordered the west indian crab cake and the conch fritters for appetizers. We have had conch in many forms on previous island travels, but this was truly expertly prepared, served with a tasty red pepper aioli. The crab cake was pretty fantastic too!
Our entrees were the star of the night...my husband ordered the local caught grouper with black bean paste, okra, and fried plantains. YUM. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the dish was overall well-balanced. As good as his dish was, I continue to drool over my entree, which was the lobster risotto. I will dream of this dish for weeks! It was creamy, garlicky, perfectly textured, and dotted with roasted pumpkin, topped with grilled lobster tail. SO good. We were happy to let the chef know how much we loved the food when he came and greeted us at our table.
After enjoying a dessert of rum cake topped with ice cream and drizzled with a delicate raspberry sauce, the friendly restaurant owner, Roger, thanked us for coming and offered us a cocktail on the house. He had the bartender whip up a concoction of fresh pineapple with vodka and lime juice. A refreshing and delicious ending to a perfect meal under the stars!
If you find yourself in St. Kitts, do not pass up the chance to have dinner at the Spice Mill. You won't regret it!
