“Quaint and Quiet”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

If you are accustomed to staying in chain hotels such as Courtyards or Hilton's, then the Townsend Gateway Inn may disappoint you. While it was clean and tastefully appointed, it is definitely dated in a few areas. However, it was built in an earlier era, and we tried to embrace the differences as "charm and quaintness". The innkeeper greeted us warmly, and we did appreciate the basket of top quality goodies that he brought to our room. They helped suffice for the lack of continental breakfasts that the large chains offer. The hotel was located right across the road from a beautiful river, and the sound of rushing water was the first to greet us when we awoke early on the morning of our departure. Townsend is very limited in its choices of accommodations, but we thoroughly enjoyed the quietness of the hotel, and its convenient location to Cade's Cove. In summary, embrace the charm of the place, and don't go in with expectations of a Courtyard.

Great location near Cades Cove and entrance to Smoky Mountain National Park. Townsend is much more pleasant than Gatlinburg which is swarming with tourists and tacky restaurants. There are a few restaurants and a laundrette close to the hotel. Rooms were spacious, clean and pleasant with a nice supply of snacks. Views of the mountains were nice and I received a really warm welcome with plenty of tips when I arrived. It is right on the road so not a secluded spot.

What can I say about Townsend Gateway Inn? It was one of the most pleasant experiences we've had and plan on going back for more. TripAdvisor reviewers got it 100% right when they gave Gateway Inn a high rating. Take a look at the online photos and I guarantee you that you'll find the same wonderful accomodations that you see in the pictures.
This family owned motel is a charming place to stay. The owners show you a hospitality that you'll never find at a larger establishment. They literally live a few steps from the motel so they can be seen during all hours attending to the every day needs of running this delightful motel. How many motels can you stay at where you can look out the window and see the owner tending to the garden? Colleen, Pete and Mike make themselves available to the guests and are not only friendly but also very helpful with suggestions of what to do and where to go to enjoy this beautiful area.
We stayed in Cabin #1 and we loved it. It was very clean and very comfortable and the bathroom was spotless. The bed was exceptionally comfortable and will guarantee you a great nights sleep. The extra pilows and blanket supplied were an unexpected bonus and they were nice for using on the bed or on the futon in the living room. Another unexpected bonus was the welcoming basket of goodies we received upon our arrival and even more surprising was that it was refilled every day with more goodies to munch.
If you don't want to stay inside, please go outside and enjoy yourself. Chairs are provided in front of the cabin and a private picnic table and grill are to the side. The view from the front of the cabin is beautiful. The motel is set back from the road with wide open space in front of it creating a nice foreground for the mountains in the distance.
They also have a large community area with comforable rocking chars and a corner fire pit. A paved path that runs along the front of the property is a perfect place for taking a walk, especially in the evening.
This is just a wonderful place to stay. The motel itself is a gem in the shadow of the Smokey's but the owners really make it shine. They truly know the meaning of hospitality. They're never too busy to stop and share some friendly words or sit down and chat if you have the time. They take pride in their establishment and it shows. We are definitely going to go back again.

Room Tip: The cabins are great. The rooms we saw were equally as wonderful.

We stayed two nights in August, the hotel is super clean, and very convenient to Cade's Cove. We like staying in Townsend as it's a lot quieter than Gatlinburg. The owner was very friendly and gave us helpful hints about restaurants , and delivered a snack basket soon after we arrived, which was very nice. We would definitely stay here again, you can't beat the price ! It rained while we were there , and it was really nice to be able to sit in the rocking chairs on the porch, and look at the wonderful view of the mountains. The river is just across the road and we could see the weir from our porch too.

Green Features: I really liked the fact that the hotel recycles , and had a recycling bin in the room.

We were 3 friends spending Labor Day weekend in Townsend and relied on the TA reviews to book the Gateway Inn. Great choice - the reviews were right. Nice spacious room, hardwood floors, a/c worked really great. Pete was so friendly and brought over snacks, helped with restaurant advice. Good location - we wanted to be close to Cades Cove. Rocking chairs were comfortable & so relaxing to rock away and enjoy the views. Sunset was so pretty too. Nice view of the mountains. Preferred staying in Townsend instead of crowded Gatlinburg. Would definitely return.

We stayed at the Townsend Gateway Inn for one night on our way down to Florida. We found it to be very clean, and very comfortable. The owner was really friendly and super nice, upon our arrival he promptly delivered a little gift basket to us filled with snacks for the kids, coffee, tea, hot chocolate etc... The property is beautiful and it's quiet and peaceful, unlike Gatlinburg which I found to be a little overwhelming and congested. It was a quick 1 mile drive to the beautiful Cades Cove area which he explored for the entire afternoon. We will plan another trip to come see the Smokies when we have more time to explore and this will definitely be where we choose to stay!

Green Features: This hotel uses green cleaning products, I was so impressed!!

They have a great view of the Smokey Mountains from the front rockers on the front porch. Staff is great and always willing to offer suggestions for food and activities. We have stayed here for the last three years, when in town for fly fishing excursions. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the daily goodie baskets are great. There is a fridge, coffee maker and microwave in the room, which comes in handy for early morning breakfasts and late dinners in room after a long day of fishing. Prices are very reasonable and you get a chance to slow down and enjoy the scenery.

Room Tip: They have individual cabins as well as rooms, but all have a view of the mountains.
