If you are accustomed to staying in chain hotels such as Courtyards or Hilton's, then the Townsend Gateway Inn may disappoint you. While it was clean and tastefully appointed, it is definitely dated in a few areas. However, it was built in an earlier era, and we tried to embrace the differences as "charm and quaintness". The innkeeper greeted us warmly, and we did appreciate the basket of top quality goodies that he brought to our room. They helped suffice for the lack of continental breakfasts that the large chains offer. The hotel was located right across the road from a beautiful river, and the sound of rushing water was the first to greet us when we awoke early on the morning of our departure. Townsend is very limited in its choices of accommodations, but we thoroughly enjoyed the quietness of the hotel, and its convenient location to Cade's Cove. In summary, embrace the charm of the place, and don't go in with expectations of a Courtyard.
