“Skip the high pressue sales people”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2012

The rooms were spacious and well maintained. We enjoyed everything about our stay except the "drop by for 30 minute" presentation which was high powered and stressful sales pitch. The grandchildren loves the water park, arcade and the ropes challenge course. With the exception of the sales person who came by our room off drop off a "gift" and encouraged us to come by for 30 minutes to learn how we could get 0% interest on our time share, which was a flat out lie we later (almost 3 hours later) learned, the entire experience was great.

We loved our 2 day stay at the Great Wilderness, the place is prfect for families and we loved the fact that we never left the resort for anything once we checked in. The staff was friendly, good food, lots of things to do to entertain all. We will be back to enjoy both the indoor and outdoor as weathger permits.

Room Tip: We will definitely look at the 2 roon suite with kitchen ammenities on next stay. The rooms with th...

We stopped here to let our 4 and 10 yr. old grandsons have a break from a long drive we had on vacation. Boys enjoyed it and it was a good size for them. The rooms were ok, nothing fancy but worked for us. We shared a room with our son's family so had two queen beds and sofa sleeper. It worked well for us.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our room was clean, beautifully decorated and everything worked! Even the remote! The staff was very pleasant and helpful. The waterpark far exceeded my expectations. Would definitely recommend this resort and hope we can go again sometime!!

Room Tip: Might be a little noisy the closer you get to the water because of all the walking traffic.

We had a great time at the waterpark. For the money, 2 days worth of waterpark rides, kids were definitely tired out and slept well. Park was very clean and just a blast, very family oriented, Will be doing it again soon!

This was a great stay with a larger family. We have 3 kids and took my mother in law with us. Love that everyone had their own space. We stayed in the Bearly Choclate Cabin that had an air hockey table and a pool table. The kids loved it. Only couple of complaints I have is the hot tub was very low on water and not all the jets worked, in fact some of them were broke and floating. The bath tubs also have jets in them so i made my daughter a bubble bath and turned them on. Lots of mold came shooting out...ewww Other then that we would go back there again. A little pricey but you also get Dolly wood tickets for the days that you are there for no extra charge.

Summary

Staff – Only encountered at check-in. Courteous and friendly.
Location – Kind of far out. Makes you sort of captive audience for the food services.
Food – Several choices on premises. So-so quality. Expect to pay a lot.
Water Park – Great. Plenty of choices to keep it interesting for 3-4 days.
Indoor Games – Kids enjoyed them. Lots to do. Expensive.
Noise level – High. Rooms not well insulated from hallway noise, or the floors above.
Room size – Wilderness rooms, smallish, cramped, not much room to hang stuff. Not enough light.
Bonus – Plenty of luggage carts! No fighting for or stealing one the night before you leave.

We (family of 5 – mom, dad, two teenage girls and one 4-year old boy) arrived at 2:00 PM on Friday November 9. When you enter the main building for check-in, you have the option to go to the counters on the left or the right. They are distinctly marked on the walls, “Wilderness at the Smokies” or “Wyndham Vacation Rentals” – or something like that.

We booked online through the website, “Wilderness at the Smokies”, so we went to that side. Check in was quick and easy. After getting our room keys, we were directed towards the far end of the counter to see about getting the parking pass. I thought that was kind of odd, since we had just gotten our room keys and pool towel cards from the desk clerk. Turns out, the “parking pass” person is the one who tries to convince you to sign up to take the Wyndham tour timeshare thing. They offered a nice incentive of $100.00 Amex gift card for going to the two hour tour of an adjacent building (more on this later). We chose not to attend, because our son has Autism and we didn’t think it was a good idea to leave him in the room with a 13 and 14 year old due to the unfamiliarity with the resort etc.

Unlike other vacation places we’ve been to, there were plenty of luggage carts to haul your stuff in on. There were 8 by the front door, and another dozen in the hallway leading towards our room.

Online, we had requested a ground floor room as close to the indoor water park as possible since our son doesn’t like elevators, and of course for convenience. The resort met our request and placed us at the perfect spot in room 11066 and 11064. We were pleased with the room location. It was actually right around the corner from where you check in, and by the snack store.

After getting unloaded and settled, we were a little hungry and decided to try that snack shop. Something to note is, the complex is kind of far out away from the town, so to get any real food you have to drive. We weren’t big on driving anywhere, so we ate quite a bit at the hotel. So, after our check-in, and visiting the snack shop… $30 later we had four 8” subs and drinks. Note that, the 20 oz bottles in the store are $2.75 each. We promptly went to Wal-Mart and bought a 24 pack of Mountain Dew. Nearly all of our meals were in the $30-$40 range each time. No matter what we got, hamburgers, pizza etc. As far as food quality, I would rate it 3/5. It wasn’t great really, but passable. In this case, you are really paying the convenience fee for not going out. I will say, one night my wife and I went to The Thirsty Miner and ate in and my grilled chicken was actually very good and I’d rate that 4.5/5. She had the chicken quesadillas and said they were pretty tasty, so I’d say 4/5 for that.

We were there for the Indoor water park, and it did not disappoint. The kids had a great time on all the different attractions. The big slides were awesome and a lot of fun. Even more so at night in the dark. Our son loved the kids play area with the big bucket and slides. The wave pool was also fun. Our favorite thing was the big hot tub (with a capacity of 107 people). Half was indoors, and half was outdoors. We spent a lot of time in that thing!

One thing we did note was, it was “colder” than we thought it would be in the Dome. I thought I read where it was 86 degrees year round. I never saw a thermometer, but it sure felt like it was in the mid-upper 70s as opposed to mid-upper 80s.

On Saturday, things got crazy. We noted on Friday that it wasn’t very crowded all things considered. There was a steady stream of new arrivals all day Saturday, and it seemed to peak around that evening, when my wife saw 20-30 cars lined up trying to get into the check in area. Indeed the water park was considerably more crowded Saturday night.

By Sunday lunchtime, the crowds had thinned out. We decided to go to Cade’s Cove and Clingman’s Dome. We arrived back at the room around 6:30 PM and the parking lot was deserted. The crowds had all left.

Monday morning, even more people had left it looked like. The whole thing was very weird. It’s as if people only came in for 1 day and then went on their cabins in the mountains maybe.

Regarding the rooms, our first night was horrible in terms of noise. We could hear every conversation in the hallway, and all kinds of noise and footsteps above us. The rooms were not well insulated at all. We even had to call security to get the people above us to quiet down.

The morning before we left, I walked over to the Wyndham side and noted that the interior décor was completely different. It was much more contemporary and modern as opposed to the “themed” wilderness décor of the main building. I wished now that I had taken that tour so I could see the room layout on that side, because our dual adjoined room set up was a little cramped. Even though ours would sleep 8 people, there wasn’t much room to hang stuff up or counter space even. We quickly ran out of room. I personally don’t like to leave stuff on the floor because of bugs. But that’s just me.

Conclusion
Would we visit again? Probably, because our son enjoyed it so much. I wish there food choices within walking distance. But you do have, Zaxby’s, Subway, Ruby Tuesday, Cracker Barrel, Ryan’s, Pizza Hut, Golden Corral, and Dunkin’ Donuts a couple miles away. The only thing we would change next time, is try the 4th floor for noise and maybe the Wyndham side.
