If you love nature, beautiful mountain scenery, the chance to listen to and see wildlife... go here! You won't be disappointed!
My husband and I decided to fulfill our original honeymoon plans by renting a Smoky Mountain cabin for our 25th wedding anniversary. We are so glad we did! High Mountain Home was everything we could have dreamed. The pictures on the website give a true feel for what you get. We were not in the least bit disappointed. The cabin was far enough from town to feel that you were away from the bustle of tourist activity, yet close enough to go in for dinner each night if we chose to do so. One night we opted for picking up frozen foods and cooking a quick dinner in the cabin. Looking out the back windows of the cabin, you could feel you were the only cabin around, yet looking out the front windows, you felt like you were in a nice hometown neighborhood with the other cabins nearby. Fortunately for us, the time of year we chose to go was off season, so the rates were lower and fewer cabins were rented than during peak season, so it was very quiet and peaceful... exactly what we were hoping for. Very little traffic could be heard passing by and we were able to enjoy the peace and serenity of the mountains that is always so soothing to us. Leading a busy lifestyle, the mountain cabin getaway was exactly what we had dreamed it would be and the single most relaxing getaway we've ever had in our 25 years of marriage.
The large plate glass windows across the back of the cabin gave an incredible view of the mountains. Even though the mountains are not as picturesque during winter as other seasons, there is something about them that soothes my spirit and makes me feel closer to God and nature.
Almost anywhere you choose to go in the cabin, from the living room with it's little electric fireplace to the upstairs game room, provides a spectacular view. We enjoyed just relaxing and soaking in the serenity of the place for the four days we were there. The upstairs whirlpool inside and the hot tub outside provided extra relaxation... everything you could possibly hope for in a mountain cabin vacation...definitely the kind of place we will return to again and again! It's a perfect place to go for inspiration if you're a songwriter, artist, photographer, or author.
Only one thing happened that slightly spoiled a few hours for us. There was a work crew repainting the cabin directly across the street from our cabin for the first three of the four days we were there. On the first day, the crew was talking very loudly and their voices echoed off the surrounding cabins and/or mountains, and to top it off, they had a very loud jam box out in the street playing a variety of styles of music that were very unpleasant to listen to that made it impossible to sit outside on the deck and uncomfortable, at best, to tolerate while inside the cabin. I thought surely they would be gone in a short time, but after about three or four hours of it, I reported it to the Cabin Fever office personnel. Since it was not one of their cabins, they called the office that managed that cabin and reported it. The crew returned for two more days, but we never heard enough noise from them to disturb our serene surroundings. That made our vacation perfect!
A couple of things that should be noted: 1) if you're looking for a secluded mountain cabin, this is probably not where you want to go, because there are numerous cabins all around you; it is set up like a neighborhood. However, if you just want to enjoy the beautiful view of the mountains and the peace and serenity that comes with that view, then this is the place to go! For us, it was fine, especially since we were there during a time that not very many cabins were occupied... that one perfect span of a few days/weeks between the regular season and Christmas season (a time when there are a lot fewer people around and you don't have to wait in line for anything you want to do.) 2) If you don't like driving around mountainsides with large drop-offs and no guard rails, then don't go here. I am so glad my husband was driving! The Preserve is located about 10 miles outside of Pigeon Forge and you drive up into the mountains to get there, but it's worth the drive if you enjoy mountain scenery.
Another cool thing about this place is that there is a picture perfect wedding chapel on the property as well as an open pavilion overlooking a most breathtaking view of the mountains. I can only imagine how gorgeous wedding pictures would be there!
I can't say enough good things about our stay with Cabin Fever Vacations at High Mountain Home (located at The Preserve). We highly recommend and plan to return!
