Stayed here on the way home from a "fall colors" trip on the Blue Ridge Parkway. We intended to stay in Asheville NC, but the hotel rates were more than double what was advertised, apparently due to the popularity of the fall colors. Unwilling to spend $140 for a night at Red Roof Inn, (the others were similarly or higher priced) we moved up the road, and stopped off in Newport, TN.
Apparently we weren't the only ones thinking the same thing, as the place was swarming with guests, some already there and dining at the attached pizza place, and more trying to get a room.
I observed the front desk clerk while I was waiting my turn to request a room, and was impressed with his efficient, friendly, and gracious manner. As I said, the place was hopping, but he was handling it quite professionally. After getting a room, and cautiously navigating the crowded parking lot (it seemed as though every guest must have surely somehow driven two cars instead of one), we got to the room which was located WAY away from the lobby. Eventually we found the ice machine which was also located a long distance from the room. The room was obviously quite newly and attractively appointed, with all the latest trends, (comfort height vanity, comfort height toilet, large flat screen TV, etc.) and seemed to be very clean. The biggest issue was the noise. We could hear people outside the room as though they were IN the room. I even checked to see if the window was open, as it was so loud. Later, the outside noise eventually died down, but we then could hear other guests talking in their rooms. It seemed that the bathroom vent was transmitting these noises from other rooms. Closing the bathroom door and turning on the fan of the room's HVAC system (which obviously didn't get renovated with the rest of room as the different settings were hand-written with marker on the unit), addressed the problem, for the most part.
Not wanting to brave all the congestion outside to find dinner, we opted to get pizza from the adjoining pizza parlor. I'm not really that crazy about pizza usually, but it was really very good, and the staff was also very friendly and efficient.
The hot breakfast was a bit dis-appointing with those weird runny "scrambled eggs" and thin gravy, but overall it was okay. The check out staff in the morning was every bit as freindly as the gentleman from the night before, and overall, I came away from the place with quite a good impression. I paid the weekend rate of $89 plus tax instead of the weekday rate of $59, but it was way better than than $140 plus in Asheville. Next time, I would try the Motel 6 as they are rated just below this BW here on TripAdvisor, (impressive for a M6), and their rate was also $59, even for the weekend.
Overall, a nice stay, the best part being the staff!
