“Great Family Friendly Stay in Nashville”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2014

A highlight of our Summer Family Road Trip - Gaylord Grand Opry was a welcome stop on our recent 10 day road trip with two boys under 7! The pools, restaurants, gorgeous atrium spaces and plenty of room to roam was just what we needed to relax. My only complaint is the excessively-long check in line.

I got the sense that the hour long wait in line to check in to our room (at 4:00 pm on a Sunday) was not that unusual. This hotel hosts a lot of conventions and really should have separate group check in spaces to avoid waiting for both convention goers and leisure travelers. The upside is that the staff at the desk was cheerful and didn't seem flustered by the line.

We stayed three days which gave us time to explore Nashville and fully enjoy the pools and restaurants at the resort. Yes, food was pricey as it is at most resorts but nothing too outrageous if you are careful. There are refrigerators in the room so I do recommend that families with small children pick up breakfast supplies and keep them in your room. Discovered that the gelato shop in the Garden Conservatory area has a travel coffee mug that you can buy and have refilled throughout your stay. Def. worth the investment if you are staying more than 2 days!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Garden block which was central to most of the hotel.

We stayed here as part of a family vacation/business trip. I was attending a conference and brought my family along. It is beautiful and everything you need is right there. The kids loves the balcony room and overlooked the waterfalls. The Convention Center is great and it looks like they are working on adding some restaurants in that area.

We went to a business conference at this hotel.we paid for the room months in advance. When we arrived at800pm we were told that we didn't have the room we paid for, after 6pm apparently they give your room away even though it was paid for months in advance. We were never told that we needed to check in before six pm to keep our paid for room. They said they guaranteed us a room, not a certain type of room. So we were given a "living room" part of a Suite. It was big, with a kitchen and a bathroom, but no beds. They said they would bring a roll out bed, which took them 2 hours to bring to our room, and only then because we called about it and complained. We also had the fold out couch. These are miserable beds. They also told us at check in we would be moved to a new room the next morning at the latest 2pm check in time and they would call and tell us when they were ready. We told them it needed to be before 2pm because that was when our meetings started and had a large event that night, they sad no problem. The next day we never e heard from them, we called several times and then a director(in our company) called her contact person. It wasn't to long and we were called and to,d we had a room(around 430pm). But when we got to registration they had no idea whAt we were talking about. That person worked on it and said she had us a room, said the bellman would be right up to help us move. We told her we had less than an hour to get ready for the evening events. We waited about 30 min, had to call and request a bellman, we were told it would be 2 hours and to go to our event and the they would change our rooms, I did tell them it was unacceptable, but we had no choice. We had about 20 min to get ready so we got started and about that time the bellman showed up to move us to our room(he was great and very helpful, which was nice). Needless to say we were late to our event. There were friendly staff, but we also had several rude ones, it was a mess, and there were many of us from our business conference they did this to( this was a Thursday night, not even a weekend). Needless to say had they told us at registration, months before, that we needed to be there by 6pm or they would give our room away we would have been there. They seemed to be incapable of handling large groups of people, which is odd for this large and this class of a hotel. I would not stay there again, and we were told that our company said they will not use this for a conference again either. So disappointed that we spent a lot of our time at this conference simply trying to get into a room.

Our family stayed here for a long weekend the end of May. I left behind a nice pair of wedge sandals. I called immediently when we got home... An 8 hour drive. They were not found. Looks like whoever cleaned the room decided to keep them. I have stayed at less priced hotels and if things were left behind, they called me before I even knew it was lost. We paid a lot of money to stay at the Opryland hotel...never again. We were just back last week and stayed at Holiday Inn Express.

I have been to at least 7 conventions that this hotel property. The convention space itself is beautiful. That being said, there were three other conventions going on the same time as ours so it virtually impossible to allow attendees time to eat at any of the (restaurants) without a minimum of a 45 minute wait. With over 2000 hotel rooms there are not enough restaurants to accommodate people, they are understaffed in every aspect from servers to managers on duty.
They need to add numerous food courts to different areas of the hotel since this property is so huge the amount of walking is endless to find anything. If your block of rooms are not near the convention center bring sneakers and walking shoes to avoid days of pain. The best part of t his hotel is the nice greeting you receive when you come. After that your own your on. A well run hotel would have had every single manager and service personnel on staff. This property suffered a flood several years ago and now the convention space is basically empty of any ambiance, sitting areas for meetings and or comfort on the first two floors so if you plan to find a place to meet, it won't be easy to find. Cascades is a beautiful restaurant and food quality is very good, nice staff so they should think about putting this type of restaurant in several different areas of the hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms that doe not have interior balconies are far more quiet.

We stayed here a couple of weeks ago as my wife had a conference. Thankfully, we didn't have to pay for the room and parking.

The room charge, plus the "resort" fee of $18 a day, plus the self parking charge of $21 a day worked out after taxes to about $250 a night (perhaps the company arranged a better rate?). As it was, the room was on the level of a Comfort Inn. Clean, but that was about it. Bedding and towels were thin. No comforter or duvet. Limited channels on the television. The air was cold when it worked but the thermostat kept going out. I was shocked to find out that Marriott manages the Gaylord hotels... this room was not good enough to be at a Marriott Courtyard.

This place is huge. If you've ever stayed at the MGM Grand in Vegas you'll have a sense of scale. Expect to walk 10-15 minutes everywhere; including to get out of the hotel. It will take you a good 24 hours to figure out how to get back and forth to your room. For $21 a night you would expect to have a parking spot. Nope. You'll get to park along the curb in no-parking areas because there are not enough spots. One tip we received was to park in the free parking at Opry Mills. We weren't paying so it wasn't a big deal; if we were it would have been.

Everything is roughly 50% more expensive than in the "outside" world. I say "outside" world because, as others have mentioned, this is very much a cruise ship type experience. The entire hotel is under a glass dome. Everything smells vaguely of chlorine and mold. Expect $11 draft beers and $18 margaritas.

The restaurants are serviceable but expensive. Expect a $50 meal to cost $100.

If you've not been to Nashville be aware, all of the bars are around the Broadway and 2nd area... which is a good 20-25 minutes from the hotel. Be sure you have a designated driver for the night or pay for a shuttle back and forth.

If you love ginormous malls, they has one.

All in all, for a room on someone else's dime it was fine. I would never pay to stay there myself.
