I booked 3 nights at the Araluen Spa Cottage which is part of the Araluen Lodge via the website. While everything looked great it was an extremely disappointing experience.
Firstly, when we arrived on the Thursday afternoon Greta was not expecting us although I had booked 5 weeks in advance.
Our initial impression was that the cottage was dirty. The carpet needed cleaning, the lounge was grotty and in general, it just didn’t feel fresh and clean. It was also a miniature cottage – very very small. I had expected a normal size cottage, not a dolls house with absolutely no room to move.
Because the cottage was so small, the air-conditioning that was used for heating during the cold Yarra Valley winters was useless because the heat was so overwhelming in such a small area.
There were no drawers at all in the bedroom for your clothes, and the wardrobe that was around 1 ½ feet wide only had 4 coat hangers inside. The wardrobe was also home to a vacuum cleaner, an ironing board, a broom and an iron.
There was a bowl of fruit that was obviously left over from the previous occupants the weekend before. I pulled out 2 pieces that were rotting and left them out for Greta to take away and I assumed that she would replace all of the fruit as it was old and past its use-by-date. However, to my surprise she took away the rotten fruit and left the other fruit without replenishing any of it.
I also left out to be replaced a dirty yellow dish cloth that looked like someone had been cleaning the floor with it. To my surprise, it was never replaced. We had to go to IGA and buy a new packet. I just can’t accept that an establishment that advertises itself as a luxury B & B would even consider not replacing the dish cloth EVERY TIME someone new arrived. Definitely a no no in my books.
The website talks about a continental breakfast consisting of locally sourced produce and homemade jams etc etc. We were given those tiny squares of jams, honey and vegemite that you get in cheap motels.
Before arriving in the Yarra Valley we spent 4 wonderful days in the Mornington Peninsular in a B & B that exceeded out expectations in every way. While we also loved the Yarra Valley, anyone who has ever been away for a special holiday and stayed in accommodation that has not met their expectations knows how disappointing it is!
