This is a magical place. The rooms are capacious, clean, high-ceilinged and simply furnished. Each has a balcony, with table and chairs overlooking the serene and orderly vineyard, and facing the morning sun. We felt like welcome guests in the owners’ home.
The public spaces are elegant. The guest lounge has comfy chairs and sofas. The restaurant and cellar door have warm clean lines. In all these rooms there is vibrant and pleasing contemporary art, well hung and for sale.
The staff are gems, without exception: a wonderful waitress from Manchester; a brilliant chef from Chamonix; a manageress who is that rare combination of driven perfectionism and relaxed accommodation.
The owners are remarkable, that is worthy of remark. Owen, the vintner, produces the wine of The Gods but wears his learning lightly, and knows all the important practical things about perfect food, as well as wine. Rhiannon, the indefatigable major-domo, is a Canadian breath of joy.
The animals delight. In the distance sheep bleat, but the four animal mainstays are “Hero”, the most gentle and devoted of border collies, and three utterly free range chickens, which Hero pretends to round up from time to time. We tasted the happiness of the chickens in every bite of our breakfast eggs.
The wine is awesome. We had a bottle of pinot gris, which was very good. We had a couple of glasses each of Shiraz, which was deep and profound. We had a bottle of the internationally known Frederick Pinot Noir, which was breathtaking. The wine comes from the vineyard we could see from our balcony.
The food is fine, beautifully presented, unpretentious. Over our two day stay, we had oysters, trout, duck, lamb, beef and chicken. All were superb, in presentation, in preparation, and in the quality of the locally-sourced produce.
You might think this idyll is “in the middle of nowhere”, but it isn’t remote at all. Tucks Road appears on the inside front cover main map of the Melways Melbourne street directory. We meandered back to our home in the east of Melbourne. It took only 90 minutes. If you need to be restored and rested, if you crave to be calmed and charmed, this will do well.
