There is a charge to go in and there is a very good guide to show you around.
The place is still a working place and it is very interesting.
Little ones get a bit bored with the long explainations of all things but over all they liked it.
Very good view over the bay and was good to hear our own history

“Protecting the state”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2014

Another wortghwile experience for visitors to Queenscliff is the Fort. Originally built in the mid 19th century to fire down on any enemies trying to take Melbourne (or Australia) by storm, it has continued its military use up to now. Though it's unlikely to be much direct use in today's warfare. So the buildings date from the mid 19th century to recent, and include ammunition tunnels, various big guns and a magnificent view of The Heads (entrance to Port Phillip Bay). it is generally only open for guided tours on weekends (with some exceptions), and the guides are people who make it interesting and who clearly love their job.

“Fort Queenscliff - a step back in time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014

I have visited many military museums and been addressed by many passionate and enthusiastic tour guides but none takes the cake more than the tour guides at Fort Queenscliff. The guide I had on the 3pm tour on Saturday 11 January 2014 certainly knows "her stuff" and by "stuff" I mean the history of the Fort and Museum, the goings-on with the local soldiers and townsfolk (predominantly the young and not-so young ladies), the story of the many buildings on site, the many and varied stories of the armaments (cannons to the uninitiated) such as the Disappearing Gun (would love to see it restored one day) and the strange and mysterious death of a soldier found shot dead and floating in the Bay during World War 2..

I commend the tour guides, the board of management, the Australian Army, the helpful Wilsons' Security guard (he can tell a mean story of fighting a grey kangaroo on night shift) and everyone involved in running the Fort for maintaining it in such pristine condition (though a coat of paint would find a good home here and there). I will certainly recommend the tour to my friends and hope to return as I didn't get to see all the exhibits in the Museum, cheers Kim Fawkes

“Worth the effort. ”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2014

We stayed in Queenscliff over Xmas 13 and thought we'd visit the fort. The visit was interesting and thought provoking look at the history of Port Phillip Bay, the Heads and our early military history and definitely worth the effort if you're in Queenscliff.
