“Just Brilliant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2012

My wife and I stayed at Cleveland Winery a few weekends ago and I have to say it was an amazing experience. The winery is beautiful and the views spectacular! We started with a wine tasting and after enjoying some of the lovely wines on offer and purchasing a couple of our favourites, along with a cheese platter (thanks for the suggestion, Monica), we sat out in the garden, cracked open a bottle of their delightful Shiraz and enjoyed the peace and scenery. Next came dinner. The food was delicious. I had the beef and my wife the salmon. All I can say is that, both our plates were squeaky clean by the end of the meal. Almost couldn't fit my sticky date pudding in...almost. Glad I did though, that was delicious too! The Staff were amazing, so friendly and nothing was a hassle, even though my wife has particular dietary requirements. I just want to thank the lovely Jodie for being so helpful in organising my wife's meals for her. After dinner we played pool together in the communal lounge (we have not had a chance to do that for years) and then some giant Jenga. After a great night's sleep we enjoyed brunch and again everything was delicious. We spied a pizza oven but were too full to stay for lunch so we will be coming back in the near future.

The venue had me arriving after midnight from the last flight in from Sydney. It was arranged they would leave the key out with directions to the room. You guessed it, no key, no directions. But they have an emergency phone with a person on call as the office is not attended 24 hours. The on call person would be helpful if he didn't turn his phone onto silent of a night so as not to be woken. When I spoke with the hotel staff this morning I was totally miffed at their lack of concern or care that I arrived at 12.30am and couldn't access the room or raise any staff. Ordinary experience so hard to judge the rest of the property fairly after my check in or lack of experience.

This was a large conference booking and unfortunately a communication problem arise as to where your key was left. The night phone was diverted to a staff member who unfortunately did not answer. We sincerely apologise that it held you up until you were able to contact our offsite manager, which I believe was within 15 minutes and she directed you to your room. As a conference centre, during the week usually our staff leave around midnight and unfortunately obviously left before you arrived. We can only apologise to you again for this mishap and your perception of the lack of concern by our staff. I have strongly enforced the end of night procedure so this does not happen again. The conference feedback from the organiser and other guests was in all areas excellent and again we appologise for your inconvenience.

We arrived at 6.35 pm with a dinner booking for 7pm. We were tired and scruffy after dropping our daughter at a campsite near by and were looking forward to some 'grown up' time. The setting is lovely, with beautiful old buildings and lovely grounds and country views. The new buildings compliment the old externally but internally are devoid of character.
Our arrival was hilarious...we went to the reception and rang the bell...and waited....and waited. We rang again and still nothing. Then we noticed an after hours phone outside the reception so we called that, only to hear it ringing furiously on the unattended desk. We waited again and in our boredom started flicking through literature scattered around the reception only to light upon an interesting article on Fawlty Towers style evenings being hosted by the hotel. We began to wonder if we were unwittingly in one. We went for a wander, it was now 6.50 and dark. The lighting was romantic but not helpful if you didn't know where you were going. We stumbled upon the restuarant and inside found about 5 couples eating and one lady taking care of the waitressing and all the drinks. It was so quiet and we felt like we had intruded into someones home. The lady we spoke to explained that as well as doing the waitressing and drinks she was also supposed to be doing front of house, which was no mean feat seeing as the reception was about 100 meters away and completely out of sight of the resturant. She asked us if we would like to eat before we checked in but we said that we would like to freshen up so she sent us back to reception to wait for her to finish serving a couple and said she would be right over. It was now 7pm and we really did feel a touch of the 'Fawlty Towers' However the lady that helped us was nothing short of divine in her attutude and finally we were checked in and sat down for our meal.
The restuarant itself lacked a bit of atmosphere but this was made up for by the very attentive way we were looked after. The food was from a set menu with about 3 choices per course. We piggged out and had all 3. I had the prawns to start and my husband the lamb cutlets which were excellent. We both had the rib eye steak with roasted veg and I have to say it was to die for in terms of flavour but of mamoth proportions.
We had missed the wine tasting in the afternoon so got to try a couple at the table and were happy with what we chose and price.
The room was clean and a good size, the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom clean and worked well. The room was very quiet and we slept well.
It could be improved with some goodies in the fridge, and the communal areas lack atmosphere and feel a little like a communal home. It is probably well suited to conference type functions. In all I think this was a lovely spot and we enjoyed our stay, however I think we may have felt differently if we had not been served by such a helpful and happy staff member. This has potential to diversify from the conference type clients to the intimate weekenders which would keep it full all week, particularly as it is only about 30 mins from the airport. Maybe a few rooms could be vamped up a bit to appeal to the romantics who want a bit of luxury. And please don't expect your poor waitress to do everything....put someone on or near the reception desk, I mean you probably pay less than $20 per hour!

Hello Christine,

Thank you for your feedback. We are very pleased you enjoyed your meal and the service offered. We have a very strong and dedicated team here.

Usually our reception is open until 6.30pm and guests are requested to check in by then and then it is pasted through to dining to cater for inhouse guests.

Unfortunately our property is spread out and the staff believed they had left a notice at reception for you to pick up the telephone at the entrance which would go direct to dining. Sorry if this was not clear. Thank you for your feedback and we really hope you will stay with us again.

First off, I really wanted to like this hotel, maybe it was the frame of mind that I was in, but its got amazing exterior presence.Hence my essay length review. The buildings look great from outside and some (one or two buildings) continue this impression inside. But the wing we stayed in felt like we went from some rustic outbuilding (but maintained) into what felt like a cheap two story dormitory. It was really devoid of character (no paintings just various shades of cream (walls and floors)) and this continued into our room which was huge but had absolutely no feel so much that you didn't want to stay in there, which really brings why this hotel misses the mark. The hotel located in a relatively isolated town (the main road has a pub and a petrol station) so there is nothing to do which leaves you to just to eat at the restaurant (meals were good), wonder through the gardens which isn't well lit up at night, drink or sit in the communal areas. But the problem is, all the internal communal areas were just like the rooms, uninviting, bland, there's no feel which is such a crime cause the hotel could be great. So facing this, we went back to the room only to discover that there is no room service, no mini bar, in the fridge there was nothing but tea and coffee in fridge... luckily we had some wine but had to venture out to the bar to get some bottles of coke. Really in 2012 where you can't get either room service or mini bar, really you could charge a fortune for the mini bar as there is nothing for miles around but you miss the opportunity! So many little things that misses the mark. I could go on but I think the review done by susan g sums up everything else I may have missed.

I really hope the owners read this review so they can address these issues as they are sitting on a potential goldmine.
