We recently had a very enjoyable stay in one of the new self-contained cabins (or 'nests') called Karma, in Kinglake. We wanted a quiet place to recharge the batteries after a particularly busy time in our lives and didn't want to have to travel to far from home. This ticked all the boxes for us - not more than 1 1/2 hours drive for us from home, surrounded by beautiful bushland (as well the property is on 3 acres of sustainable garden), and there's plenty to see and do in the area if we wanted.
Only recently opened, the wonderful owners Karen & Macca are in fact still putting the finishing touches to the landscaping. Back in February 2009 this area was engulfed in the Black Saturday fires which nearly destroyed Kinglake and Karen & Macca lost everything on that terrible day. But they had a vision and determination to rebuild, not just their own home, but a place where others could visit and stay and enjoy what is a beautiful part of Victoria and a place they loved.
Having travelled extensively themselves and stayed in lots of different types of accommodation, they've put all that knowledge to good use. We found our 'nest' very comfortable and well appointed with everything you might need, along with good appliances, a well equipped kitchen, a very comfortable bed, and a fabulous shower. It also had a great little deck and outside sitting area with it's own BBQ.
We got talking to another family staying there, and they said their kids just loved the Bollygum Adventure Park just 3 minutes walk away, as well as being able to pick vegetables from the vegie patch and feed the chooks - the kids by all accounts were having a ball.
Karen & Macca hope to have the B&B suites available soon, which are part of their amazing new home which they are about to move into.
We'd certainly recommend it highly for anyone looking for a break from Melbourne. You won't meet a more friendly, hospitable and helpful couple than Karen & Macca. We loved it!!
