We stayed at one of the historic nineteenth century cottages on the Royal Mail Mt Sturgeon property and it was faultless. The cottage was perfectly appointed. The lounge was spacious and comfortable with the fireplace freshly stacked and ready to go. The kitchenette had everything we needed, including a minifridge packed with a sumptous gourmet breakfast. The views to Mt Sturgeon were breathtaking. We loved the brilliant design of the watertank/bathroom; so clever!
The first night we were collected by the staff in the Royal Mail car to enjoy the degustation experience. The flavours were exciting and each morsel was savoured, although despite twice advising the maitre d' both at the time of booking and as we were seated that one of us doesn't eat red meat, we were served a dish of veal marrow. When this was pointed out he was extremely apologetic and graciously discounted the bill. Mistakes do happen.
The bistro experience on the second night was more enjoyable as we had a prime position of the kitchen and it was impressive such a quiet and fluent momemtum seemed to hum through it. Personally I probably enjoyed the bistro experience more overall as the service was more relaxed and the food equally impressive. We felt less rushed in the bistro. (A couple of times on the evening before my unfiinished wine was whisked away with a 'you have finished haven't you'? How could I argue with the man when my wine was then halfway to the kitchen?).
We did hike up Mt Sturgeon and loved the challenge, particularly running back trying to beat the rain. You must also try the modest little cafe opposite the Mail where we enjoyed perfectly cooked chicken curry and sublime local wine after this. Perfection and a steal when we saw the bill!
It is worth the trip to Dunkeld and we were very satisfied with our experience.
Definitely choose an offsite cottage; much quieter and better appointed from what other readers have...
