“Indulgence on the last night of our holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2012

We're big Grampians fans and go there regularly but generally camp or do a self-catered farm stay, which means that until this time we only had had drinks and/or lunch at the Royal Mail before. It seemed fitting that on our last night of the family holiday we'd stop there for dinner and accommodation. The 2 bed apartment was wonderful, clean and modern with lots of luxuries (bathrobes, Peter Morrissey toiletries, T2 teabags, paper delivered to the door, etc.) and lovely views of Mt Sturgeon from the balcony. There's also a swimming pool in the hotel, which was welcome on that hot Summer day. The continental breakfast included is generous and great quality, consistent with the philosophy of the place. It was also wonderful to wake up to the sound of local birds. It was a total treat!

I'm guessing most people would come here just to visit the well regarded restaurant. The hotel rooms are worth staying overnight. Well presented, spacious and modern, there is a lot to like. Small gripes like walking across the road for a standard room and having to pay for internet which runs out if you don't use it within 2 hours were just that - small. The bar has a great selection of beers, spirits and a very good menu if you don't feel like the bistro or can't get a table at the restaurant.

This is our second tine st the royal mail. We were very excited to go back as the first trip a year ago. The rooms are beautiful great beds towels gowns divine. Packet nescafe coffee was a surprise disappointment. The spa in the bath didnt work and the spa plugs in the bath were a bit gungy. The wood blinds also were a little sad. Hopefully in the next year or so they will upgrade and maintain what they have.

We had dinner in the bistro which was sensational. Beautifully presented food with divine attention to detail. The bistro manager was a bit over the top...he just needs to calm down a bit .. A bit less mr. Bean flourish :) dinner at the pub is outstanding great value for money

Stayed 2 nights in a Mountain View room, number 10.

Check-in was a breeze, with friendly and efficient service at the reception desk. They were able to find a last-minute talke at the bistro on our second night, which we didn't realise had to be booked.

The room was huge with a queen bed as well as a single bed which was good for relaxing during the day. It was very hot outside during our stay but the air-conditioning worked perfectly and kept the room nice and cool. The bed was very comfortable with quality linen. The bathroom was good with a huge shower, however was starting to show signs of wear and tear, for example worn grouting between the tiles. I was a bit disappointed there was no Aesop toiletries as mentioned in other reviews but the Peter Morrissey toiletries were adequate.

True to its name, the room had a view of Mt Sturgeon however it also overlooked the pool and other rooms. It was still very private and quiet, but it wasn't an unobstructed view as suggested in the photos on the website.

The minibar was well stocked with quality wines, spirits and beer, and a fresh lemon to make a G&T. My only criticism is that I would have liked more choice in snacks, they only had chips and chocolate. This wouldn't be a problem in city hotels, however there is only one general store in Dunkeld which was closed for much of our stay (public holiday). I would recommend other travellers bring their own snacks to supplement the mini-bar items.

The included continental breakfast was plentiful, and we appreciated them making a cafe-style coffee as we much prefer that to filtered. Guests can choose to purchase hot items from the menu for around $15, but we found the museli, croissants, toast and fresh and stewed fruit more than enough.

The pool was great to refresh after a day spent bushwalking in the Grampians. For the energetic, I can recommend the 3.5-hour hike up Mt Abrupt with spectacular views at the end. The hotel will suggest other less-challenging walks if you prefer. We attempted the river walk but after seeing two snakes in 10 minutes, we decided to turn back.

All in all, this was a pleasant stay which I would recommend to others. The highlight of this hotel is the on-site restaurant of the same name which I have reviewed in the restaurant section.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with unobstructed mountain views; some of the 'Mountain View' rooms overlook...

Dear traffjudd

Thank you very much for choosing to stay with us recently and for taking the time to post such a detailed review.

I was delighted to read your comments on how enjoyable all aspects of your stay were.

We have recently completed a $800,000 refurbishment project on our 10 Deluxe Mountain View rooms and please stay tuned for possible further room enhancements in the near future. We have recently also chaged the bathroom amenities from one well know brand to another and have received much positive feedback.

We will look forward to welcoming you back again soon.

I travel a lot in rural Victoria for work and promised to treat myself to a night at the Royal Mail rather than the fairly ordinary motels found in Hamilton. I booked that morning and on arrival I was upgraded to a mountain view room and they managed to get me a seat for the bistro that night. Whilst this is not a food review it is all that people rave about. Great local produce and attentive staff. The room was a quality fit out with nice accessories. Bed luxurious. No noise seepage from occupied rooms alongside. Parking a short distance from the rooms so no - "first up - all awake' from early risers slamming car doors and leaving at first light. It really is worth the extra - you can have the stock standard 'travelling salesman' motel experience 30 minutes away in Hamilton or treat yourself - life is short - spoil yourself!

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 19, 2011

Our family group (three brothers and partners and a 12 year old nephew) spent a couple of nights at the Mount Sturgeon cottages. We loved the accommodation; the cottages are rustic, comfortable and well equipped, and the peaceful outlook over treed paddocks towards the southern Grampians is superb.

Unfortunately our experience at the Royal Mail bistro was less impressive. They seemed not to want to take our booking for seven people, even suggesting that we would have to sit at two separate tables before reluctantly agreeing to put two tables together provided we ate at 6.30. We were subjected to questioning as to our nephew’s behaviour, whether he would sit quietly at the table and not run around the restaurant – the whole booking experience could only be termed unfriendly.

The menu is not necessarily designed for 12 year olds, and we recognised in advance that this would be the case, but our polite request that our nephew be served a simple bowl of fries was met with a flat denial – “under no circumstances would the chef agree”; this despite the fact that people in the bar were being served exactly this.
We were placed at a table in the corner, service was slow, we had to get up to request drinks, and when our main courses were cleared any form of attention from the wait staff ceased. After sitting for 25 minutes waiting for dessert menus we decided to leave, and no-one seemed to notice that we had vacated our table. If we had behaved badly we might have understood, but we were just a quiet family group trying to have a pleasant evening like the other diners around us.

It is difficult to be subjective about a restaurant where you felt unwelcome from the time you entered. The establishment seems to thrive on the awards it wins, and the staff has an attitude that reflects this, but for what it’s worth we considered the food bland and overpriced. My impression is that they just want to fill the place each night with couples or tables of four (preferably restaurant reviewers), and we didn’t fit their mold.

We’d booked at the bistro again for the second night of our stay, but cancelled the booking and used the BBQ at the cottages instead. It was an infinitely more pleasant meal and evening than the Royal Mail Bistro.

Our reason for staying at the Royal Mail was to experience their award wining fine dining. I will begin with the room and stay and then comment on the food. We stayed in a newly refurbished Mountain View room 2019. I purchased the Dine and unwind package that included sparkling wine, koko black chocolates, fruit, late checkout, degustation dinner with matching wines, and breakfast. All in all a pretty good value package. The room was fresh, a bit plain with no art on the walls, a balcony with two chairs and table. A desk area and indoor chairs and table. The mini bar and tea making facilities were behind a large sliding door and out of sight. The closet was beside the bar area, also behind a sliding door. The sliding door arrangement was quite unique, as you had to pull out then slide the door over and could not open both doors at once.
The king bed was comfortable, but the pillows were horrible. Flat pancakes. The linen was fine, but could be of better quality for the price you are paying for this room, We still had a good nights sleep. Bathroom was large with an open glass shower and overhead rain shower only. Very nice aesop toiletries. Decent quality towels. You were also provided with pool towels. The bathroom was very clean and fresh.
Overall we liked the room and the view. The extras were nicely set up and waiting for us in the room on arrival. But if it would like to be five star there are a few things that deserve attention. There was no room safe. The pillows were horrible. No luggage stand to place your suitcase on. No art on the walls, however there were some pretty vases in the bathroom. No map of the walking trails in our room, at least I could not find it. The pool looked good, but did not have a swim, not enough time.
The highlight of the stay was our meal. We really loved each course and the matching wines were very much to our taste. Upon arrival we were pleasantly greeted and promptly poured a glass of bubbles. The service was fantastic and seamless. It was a very memorable dining experience for all the right reasons. The dining room is quite plainly decorated, but does fit in with the vibe of the whole place. We were seated at a table with a nice view of the pass. A plus was the short walk "home" at the end of the night.
Breakfast was continental and you could purchase eggs, etc on top if you liked. Nothing special, but I did love the local sheep's milk yogurt. Yum.
Check out, no problem. The drive from Melbourne took about 3.5 hours on pretty good roads. In my opinion you come to the Royal Mail to experience so very very good dining
