“Need to try harder...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2011

Basically two-star cinder block hotel with a five-star veneer. Friendly and helpful staff, and the rooms look nice. But the internet was at best deadly slow or at worst not working at all. The toilets have bus station style flushometers and kinda stunk up the room -- which one got used to when in the room for a while -- but on entering, phew! Perhaps most frustrating the front desk refused to give us an extra 30 minutes to check out. (Why is Australia the only place on the planet that throws you out at 10am, anyway?)

The grounds are lovely, although the km walk back from town is up a long hill.

Old established gardens that are just right for a picnic together. Breakfast at their cafe was nice and relaxed with friendly staff that wanted to please. A bit of a walk into the main street though. We also enjoyed an evening meal at the Green Shed. We would happily visit here again. A quiet place to explore Beechworth from.

Our family of four stayed with another family of four in the Gatehouse for 4 nights. Although the place is riddled with salt damp and is in desparate need of renovation its size is impressive. It can accomodate 17 people so our group of 8 had plenty of room. We had access to all the hotel facilities and the pool was a wonderful afternoon place for our kids (and us) to spend. Beechworth is a fantastic town to explore over a few days and La Trobe at Beechworth is located at the top of an incline not far from the main street. The staff that we encountered were very helpful and did their best to accomodate our requests and answer our questions. The grounds were expansive and beautifully looked after. The tennis court was situated near the cottages and all equipment can be hired free for hotel guests. One point about the bistro: the meals were no better than food you can prepare yourself, eg. the pasta was pre packaged ravioli.

I’m writing this sitting up in bed as a warning to all future guests, do not stay if you are looking for a quiet environment. We booked a Liniker Deluxe Room, drove 4 hours from Melbourne, greeted by a pleasant security guard who handed us the keys. The first night was very peaceful, with only the sound of the rain. Saturday night, however, we were kept awake by a mixture of Jimmy Barnes, Queen, Rolling Stones and other pub favourites. Needless to say the function venue is located within 100m of the hotel, and with little noise insulation does not make for a welcome environment away from the city. This destroyed what would have been a nice weekend away.

Pick somewhere else to stay regardless of how nice it looks and sounds in the brochure because you just don’t know what else they management has allowed to occur! (or warn you about for that matter).

Just a quiet note from management that this review was posted 3 years prior to the George Kerferd Hotel opening. The review should really be attributed to Latrobe at Beechworth and not the George Kerferd Hotel.

Thank you

We booked into the 'Kiama Lodge' at La Trobe at Beechworth as the last stop on a cycling tour. We arrived in the beautiful grounds in the morning to drop a car and rode the wonderful bike trail (all down hill) to Everton, about 20kms away. On our return we collected a huge bunch of keys from reception, and went to the Lodge. The advertising material on the website is misleading. The lodges (there are three) are clusters of cells for inmates of an insane asylum. It was barely renovated, the sitting room contained only a few cheap couches and a tiny TV reeked of rubbing alcohol like a doctor's surgery. Our children innately sensed this was a place with a bad history. I've stayed in some pretty strange and poorly appointed places, and often this can be fun in its own right. Not here. The suffering of the former inmates has permeated the place - so much so they offer ghost tours! We returned the keys and organised alternative accommodation, sans deposit.

Just a quiet note from management that this review relates to accommodation, Kiama Lodge, has nothing to do with the George Kerferd Hotel.

The review should be attributed to Latrobe at Beechworth and not the George Kerferd Hotel.

Latrobe at Beechworth offers a wide variety of accommmodation options, from motel type rooms to group accomodation in renovated Victorian cottages. All are set in the stunning, expansive grounds of a former psychiatric hospital. The motel has a swimming pool and a restaurant (but you need to check on opening hours). A short walk down the hill to the historic main street of Beechworth. Lovely!
