“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2014

After reading the rave reviews, I took my wife to Afous to celebrate her birthday with great expectations. The service was good, however our experience was not as good as what others have described on this site after they got our order wrong. We ordered two tappas, two mains and a side of veg. The tappas came out very quickly which was great as we were quite hungry. The halloumi salad was okay but nothing special. My wife commented that it was something we could make at home. The scallops seemed under cooked, cold and no flavour. After about 20-30 minutes after we finished tapps the owner came and said they don't have any veg!! It was then we realised that he ordered us the seafood bastilla, not the seafood paella we actually ordered. He said this was no problem and they would cook the meal we ordered. We were then left waiting for at least another 30 minutes for our mains so over an hour between the tappas and mains. This was a Tuesday night so they weren't that busy. The lamb main was nice but the seafood paella was very bland and lacked the spice and flavour we were hoping for from a moroccan/spanish dish.
Overall it was okay but unfortunately we did not feel the food was nearly as good as what we were expecting and the delays in our order didn't help.

“Enthusiastic host and good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2014

After a bit of a fiasco with parking we arrived at Afous to be individually welcomed by the host. His small welcoming ritual and explanation of his restaurant set the scene nicely. Some of the wait staff seemed a bit new and unsure of themselves. No matter.

The food is best shared with friends so you get to try as much as possible. Our dips arrived with the entrees, making them a bit redundant but they were still nice. The Lady Fingers were excellent. The scallops were large, beautfully textured and served with a mild corn salsa.

The mains is where the sharing comes into play. We had the Seafood bstilla, lamb tagine, meatballs and merguez with the first two dishes starring, but all were well flavoured and enjoyable. Better Morroccan than we had had at a more well known restaurant elsewhere.

Desserts were also nice. A short selection but varied enough.

We asked a waiter for coffee and were told they don't serve it. On checking, the answer came back that they serve coffee moroccan style. What's moroccan style? Our waiter went off to check. sigh. It turns out that moroccan style coffee is spiced with cardamom and there's another little ritual to serve it. Along with the mint tea, I would have been disappointed to miss it.

We enjoyed the night here. It's always great to see such enthusiasm from the owner. (Try Jambo Jambo in Crows Nest for example). The food was very good and the BYO means you get to take something you want to drink.

Happy to recommend this one.

“A meal out of the ordinary!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 24, 2014 via mobile

Service and welcome excellent, food delicious, atmosphere lovely. Would definitely come again. Portions large so would suggest sharing mains if you don't have large appetites. Don't trust google map directions, last marina on right before Spit coming from Mosman, first marina on left after Spit coming from Manly. Google sent us on a wild goose chase. Really glad we chose this place from trip adviser recommendations.

“First visit and will definitely return”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2014

Loved the fact that my wife and I arrived before opening time and it was no problem , we were seated and the fantastic service began . We ordered a number of dishes from the Tapas selection and loved them all especially the meatballs, the haloumi , the lamb skewers and the mini octopus .
Being wine lovers we are really happy that it is BYO .
Looking forward to returning with many different friends .
