5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2012

Stayed 5 nights at the savoy, a boutique hotel staff wonderful, always helpful and a ready smile each time I'd pass them. Double bay is gorgeous, most people very nice, except the more pricey clothing stores, god forbid you even look at any of their things let alone touch them. Savoy is right in the centre of everything and within walking distance of all that interested us, very clean and although may need some upgrading I liked the oldness, gave it character. AT first I thought being the only hotel in double bay we'd be treated like outcasts. They treated us great I couldn't have asked for better. Accommodation , if another hotel does open up there I'd still. Choose the savoy

Room Tip: We got upgraded to first floor rooms, they were bigger and very nice

This was our third stay spread over ten years and each time we have upgraded. This time we booked an executive room( on the top floor|) and balcony with just a glimpse of the harbour r(not quite the opera house) The hotel's location in Double Bay is its best selling point with its smart shops; range of cafes/restaurants and excellent transport links. However we have always found the staff friendly and rooms well serviced, although a cloth to dry dishes would be helpful. We accept that some aspects of furnishings have been there a while but had no complaints about our room and since our last visit improvements have taken place in the first floor lounge and the breakfast cafe has been relocated on the ground floor offering ready access to the public. On balance we still believe the Savoy is value for money and would certainly stay there again.

Room Tip: The third floor executive suite had sun on the balcony all day

The main Knox Street entrance features a display claiming the Savoy to be a boutique hotel for discerning travellers. The website describes it as like a private club and a home away from home. However, the rooms were basic and run-down in every possible way. The twin room I stayed in with my daughter had beds made up with sheets and duvets but no duvet covers. I queried this with the receptionist 1) on the grounds of hygiene 2) mis-representation of photographs on both the hotel and tripadvisor websites. She told me it was management policy not to use duvet covers on any beds in any rooms. The furniture and furnishings were low-quality eg unmatched beds, bedside cabinets, wardrobe and fridge cupboard. Everything was random, seedy and the thin carpet was sticky. This supposedly Superior room, as opposed to Standard, was described as looking into a courtyard, which was actually a dark space next to a store room. The room smelled of poor drainage and damp. I queried this with the receptionist who said it is a problem of this type of inner room which is difficult to ventilate and keep aired. She would ask the cleaners to attend to it the next day. Their solution was to leave on the bathroom wall heater ALL DAY so that the room was unbearably hot when we returned that summer's evening. The painted walls and doors were grubby and chipped. The shower room was very small and run-down eg old, cracked tiles, no drain cover in the basin and fixed wall soap dispensers which reminded me of a public toilet rather than a boutique hotel. I could go on to describe the cockroaches in the second floor seating guest area and my conversation with the receptionist, which was reminiscent of an episode of Fawlty Towers but I will stop there! Overall, nothing was 'boutique' or likely to satisfy a discerning traveller. I agree the room price I paid, AU$135 for Wednesday/Thursday and AU$145 for Friday/ Saturday, was less than many CDB hotels. Also, Double Bay is a delightful location with much to recommend it. However, neither of these excuse seedy, run-down, basic rooms mis-represented as 4**** standard. I have stayed in many Backpacker hostels with no pretentions of grandeur but better rooms than this so-called boutique hotel.

Room Tip: I looked at rooms of different prices and on different floors but saw none which matched the claims...

The Savoy's best asset is its location. Set in smart Double Bay, there's scope for lots of exploring around interesting streets, shops and restaurants. Nevertheless, for first time visitors to Sydney, perhaps a CBD hotel is more convenient. The Savoy is clean, functional and comfortable. The rooms vary in standard - mine was quite spacious with a comfortable bed, sofa and desk. The furnishings were a little worn (tired) and the room needs a general refreshening. The broken lights in the bathroom were fixed promptly once reported. Pleasant service with basic dining and refreshment areas.

This hotel is in a fantastic location surrounded by cafe's, restaurants and a couple of pubs. There is a little beach and a park a short stroll away, and a wharf with the fisherman's club on it where you can get a drink over looking the water. This is also where the ferry pulls in to go to Circular quay or in the other direction to Watson's Bay. We had previously lived in the Eastern Suburbs for years but had never been to Double Bay. The hotel location and price really deserves 4 stars but the hotel room itself was in need of attention, electrical tape hiding a hole in the bathroom, cracked sealing where it looked like water may have come through, a coat of paint needed, but to be fair we did chose the cheapest room which was $125 a night this room is also pretty dark as you only look out on to other rooms, so not a lot of light. If the superior room had been available we would have chosen it. Parking is a bit of an issue around Double Bay, you can park free after 6.00pm on a Saturday but there isn't any free parking around, so we paid $15 as the Savoy has 4 parking spots in a car park near by, if you have a lot of luggage drop it off at the hotel first as its a bit of a walk. We had a really nice stay here and would visit again.

Double Bay is a delightful upmarket suburb of the city and this hotel is just two blocks from the ocean and the ferry dock that takes you to Circular Quay (just 9 minutes on the fast service). You are near an array of beaches with Bondi a short bus journey away. Other buses pass nearby that will take you in to the city centre or you can take the ferry to Circular Quay and on to all the other main points in the city.
The hotel is simple and a bit kitch in some aspects, but spotlessly clean and with exceptionally helpful and friendly staff. It is actually a bit of a lost opportunity, as it could be a really exceptional property, but then it would loose its charm and for sure be double the price. They are great coffee shops and restaurants nearby. Don't miss Indigo for breakfast, lunch or brunch. A place to sit and enjoy people watching.
This hotel is a fantastic option if you are on a limited budget, want to have easy and quick access to all the main points of the city, and to stay in a charming neighbourhood.

First, the guy at the front desk was awesome!

So friendly and helpful, I couldn't speak highly enough of him. Secondly, the position was incredible. Right in the heart of gorgeous Double Bay, with cafes, shops, a walk to Edgecliff station and an even easier walk to the Ferry docks. Two options for getting into the city (downtown Sydney) in a matter of minutes.

The ferry is by far the more beautiful travel choice! The figs and surrounding houses and building are gorgeous and show off some of the best that Sydney has to offer.

The room was small-average sized hotel room, the bedding was clean. We had a child with us and used the fold out couch as abed as well as the queen bed. With the fold-out opened and made-up there was hardly any room to move about - beware! There was a small table and 2 chairs that were able to be used and a small bar fridge, which were nice convieniences.

Another great feature was that the fold-out was made up and out when we arrived, which was a great touch. Too often they know you will be using the fold out couch, and when you arrive you have to open it up yourself and deal with all the cushions - or worse, open it up and make it up yourself! The savoy is clearly good at customer service as this was all done in anticipation of our arrival - thank you Savoy.

The bathroom had some newer touches - the vanity and sink looked new, but the tile and shower did not. Some mould and mildew, throughout the shower and floors and a build up of dirt and dust in the corners of the bathroom, the bathroom door had cracks in it and was water-warped. One of the days we were there the floor drain had some kind of terrible smell coming from it. It dissipated by the next morning.

The bathroom was VERY small and the letdown of the room. Though the room was definitely on the older side, it all seemed very clean and well-looked after. Sadly, the bathroom let the whole room down. If they could renovate this to a cleaner, newer look, I would rave about this hotel.

All in all, the hotel provided for our needs, and at a reasonable price (about $130/night I think). We only used parking for one night ($15/night) as there was street parking that was able to be utilized as long as you were prepared to move your car around after your few hours were up.

They did have an economical breakfast option also, that we didn't take advantage of.

I would visit again if it were just for a night, but if staying a few nights like we did for 3 of us, it was a little small and the bathroom not clean enough. If they fixed the bathroom situation, I would stay here everytime I was in Sydney!
