“LOVED it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2014

We've travelled a lot in Mexico and Central America and just recently spent some time at Bungalows Lydia. One of the most relaxed and beautiful vacations that we've ever experienced!
Within minutes after getting settled in the Panorama room, we saw Humpbacks breaching in the Pacific and pelicans flying below us. So many beautiful birds. The combination of staying in the jungle (wonderful shady walks), having an amazing private beach, little outdoor kitchen and far enough from town to make it very private was perfect. We loved the town of San Pancho and found some wonderful restaurants, but for most nights, we just wanted to get ceviche to go and take it back to Bungalows Lydia. There just can't be a more beautiful place to enjoy fresh seafood and a glass of wine. The only thing we'll do differently next time is rent a car instead of a golf cart. It can be quite a bumpy road to and from town. A bit too bumpy in a golf cart!

Room Tip: Loved the Panorama room, but the waves crashing against the waves below can be quite loud!

This is simply one of the most beautiful and relaxing settings that we have ever encountered.
Being there for over a week in the middle of November, we were lucky enough to have it mostly to ourselves, and even when "busy" on a holiday weekend, the atmosphere was tranquil and fun.
We were fortunate enough to have the Panorama Suite, and it certainly lives up to its name. The views for over 180 degrees are spectacular. It is also very private, with north views the other units don't get.The sound of the ocean, especially at night, is intoxicating and relentless. The ocean, is alive with whales, dolphins, birds and schools of fish. Lying by the pool, binoculars in hand, watching the action was amazing.(On our first morning, from our room, we watched a school of large Jacks, chase a school of little fish into the beach, in a feeding frenzy, with some stranding themselves on the beach, where they were promptly set upon by lucky crabs!!). Turtles lay their eggs right there on the beach. The stars are amazing etc etc...you get the drift. There are no TV's,restaurant or bar, hand holding staff,or laid on entertainment (they will efficiently arrange things though), just the most beautiful absorbing natural location to savor and enjoy.
The whole place is beautifully designed, out on it's own headland, a nice distance away from the "town". It is impeccably maintained, with small nice gardens, and only the inevitable little flaws that go with living over a salty ocean.
As someone who is normally a little restlessly inquisitive in new places, it was a surprise to find to find little desire to do anything except to hang out at Bungalows Lydia, walk on the beaches, snorkel by the rocks (lots of Rays), eat at Barracudas or Tacos Arbolitos, in town, and watch the sunset by the pool.
The staff were great. Mayte ran the place with a quiet discreet efficiency. She was really helpful and informative when asked. She had some great photos of some baby turtles they had saved, incubated and released, the week before we arrived. Lily, our house keeper, is someone special.
Hopefully this place will be able to hang on to its beautiful natural secluded location, and great staff, for a little while longer.

Room Tip: The Panorama room was amazing , but the ocean can be loud, loud, LOUD.

We just drove in to this place by following the signs in San Pancho. It was unreal. The pool and the rooms were perfect. The location peaceful. The hosts (Claudia and Moses) and Lydia and her sister were fantastic hosts. the property is spectacular. The beach a perfect and peaceful retreat. The only suggestion I have to make it better? providing coffee in the morning would be nice. Also, I think we paid too much because they charged us $2,600 pesos (about $200/night) and the website said we should have paid $170/night. But maybe that was because we only stayed 1 night and not 3 nights as required on the website. I did not care too much becuase this place is a jewel and we will certainly return again soon.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great

This was our second stay after finding Bungalows Lydia four years ago. Without a doubt this is one of the most wonderful places in the world. It has just the right amount of seclusion, beautiful beaches, views of passing whales and dolphins and to top it all off Lydia and Mayte have added a killer breakfast option to wake up to. The Town of San Poncho has grow a bit since our last visit, there are now 2 bank machines in town, but it has a great small town feel and the locals are super nice. As for Lydia and Mayte, they treat you like family and are always there to help. If you are looking for an off the beaten-path vacation this is the spot. Get ready for life to slow down to the natural rhythms of San Poncho.

We had an excellent time at Bungalows Lydia. The beach is almost entirely to yourself (although the waves make it difficult to get into the water), excellent for sunbathing. The sound of the waves crashing against the cliff is amazing, it's pretty loud, but we loved it and slept with the windows open. I had a great night sleep.

It's a very short drive to San Pancho's main street filled with colorful people and great restaurants. We also did day trips to Sayulita and Punta Mita which are about 15 and 45 min away. If you go to Punta Mita, hire a boat trip to Marietas Islands, an amazing site.

This is not a luxury hotel, it's more like going to a beautiful ranch house one of your friends owns... only it's located above a small cliff overlooking the water.

This was our second stay at Bungalows Lydia (the first being in 2011). For this trip we were in the Sunflower Suite - which is a nice location when traveling with kids (closest to the pool). Amazing views, beautiful grounds, clean pool and a very friendly staff.

The pool is fantastic but not very big so if the resort is full, it can be a bit crowded. The kitchen was outside and consisted of a decent fridge and gas fired cook top. The kitchen is extremely spartan - I cannot stress this enough. The sunflower suite is billed as two bedrooms. It's more like one big room with two beds (a king and a queen). There is little if no privacy between the beds.

Bungalows Lydia is located at the north end of town and thus very quiet, with a private beach. It's definitely worth having a rental car for trips to and from town.

We found the prices to be reasonable and loved the location and setting. We will definitely visit again.

We LOVE Bungalows Lydia! Let me repeat: We LOVE Bungalows Lydia! My wife and I just completed 7 fantastic nights in the Panorama Suite celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. All of the outstanding reviews of Bungalows Lydia are right-on and accurate. This is a dream paradise. We have previously traveled extensively to many beach locations in Mexico, the Carribbean, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Barbados, etc. and Bungalows Lydia and the town of San Pancho beat them all!
From the moment we arrived, the owners Mayte and Lydia made us feel welcome while at the same time allowed us plenty of privacy. The support staff -Lupita (who does the housekeeping, breakfast cooking, etc.) and Jose Guadalupe- (combination groundskeeper and security guard) are also outstanding!
The view of the beautiful Pacific Ocean, with the 2 very private North & South beaches and jungle and mountains behind was fantastic! We spent hours on our private patio overlooking the rocks and water below, lounging in the infiniti swimming pool overlooking the ocean, exploring the beaches below, watching the unbelievable sunsets every evening, and listening to the sounds of the ocean waves at night added to the ambiance of this dream paradise.

If you are looking for a 5 star all-inclusive hotel with your every whim catered to and all the trimmings then don't come here because you probably would be happier in Puerto Valalrta at one of the resorts. The rooms here are simple. You will need to dispose of your toilet paper in the bathroom trash can. There are no door locks or safe vaults in the room, but you don't need them here anyway. We brought our ipad, iphones (yes, they do have w-ifi here and Facebook is just a click away on your mobile phone), left our wallets, jewelry etc. in the room and had absolutely no problems. If you don't rent a car you can either ride a taxi into town or walk on the jungle road. (San Pancho is about 2 miles away-if you are on foot-bring a flashlight with you at night as the road is dark)
Tips from us:
(1.) A rental car is handy to have here as Bungalows Lydia is approx. 2 miles from San Pancho We got our car at Hertz Car Rentals at the PV Airport.
(2.) Stop at either Wal-Mart or the new Mega store in Bucerias on your way up. (We missed the Wal-mart exit and went to Mega). Since the rooms have gas stoves and refrigerators, we bought breakfast foods, milk, bottled water, chips, lunchmeat, coffee, etc. Most nighst we had dinner at the various restaurants in San Pancho-all were very good: Maria's, La Playa, La Perla, and Las Palmas (think mahi-mahi cooked in a banana leaf with delicious cheese and shrimp on top, guacamole salad that is to die for!) We went out to lunch twice at Baja Takeria (delicious shrimp and fish tacos)
(3.) Two of the rooms at Bungalows Lydia have outdoor refrigerators: the Panorama Suite and also the Sunflower Suite. If you rent either of these rooms and bring your own groceries/food like we did beware- you will most likely have raccoon visitors at night. They will go after your bread, potato chips, etc.-almost any food you bring. The first night we were there I was awakened around 2:30 AM by chirping sounds on our patio-at first I thought they were birds, but when I opened the patio door I discovered 3 raccoons devouring a loaf of bread my wife had left out. The next day Mayte told me to use the bungee cord (which is provided) to keep them out of the refrigerator. I did use it and they still managed to pry open the refrigerator door again the second night. We finally resorted to wedging a patio chair against the refrigerator door the remaining nights and that did the trick-no more problems!
(4.) If you have trouble sleeping you might want to bring some earplugs, particularly if you rent the Panorama Suite as the ocean waves can be loud crashing on the rocks at night. However, my wife and I had no difficulty falling asleep and found the ocean sounds to be very relaxing. The other suites (with the exception of the Sunset Suite which is below the Panorama Suite) are further away from the ocean and should be better if sleeping is an issue.
In conclusion: for a romantic, quiet, private vacation to an unbelievable beach paradise whose locale and beauty is unparalleled we heartily recommend Bungalows Lydia and are dreaming about our return again in the near future!
