“Basic but pleasant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2012

Small, basic but clean room with a decent sized bathroom with good shower. The Aberthaw is an average B&B at a reasonable price. Breakfast was great and the staff terrific, but the mattress could do with replacing. Barry itself is hardly worth a visit.

Myself, my husband and a freind stayed for three nights 24th Aug till 27th and enjoyed it very much. The people who ran the hotel were very freindly and the breakfast was excellent. Having the bar facility was great and we had a night cap each night before bed. We were there for the cricket at the SWALEC and would definatly use this hotel again.

In the range of budget hotels, this one was top for its category. Wasn't expecting a lot considering the price - just looking for a clean, budget-friendly hotel near airport, but my travelling buddy and I were pleasantly surprised by the little extras (hairdryer, iron, ironing board, tea tray/kettle) in our rooms in this large, traditional house turned hotel. Rooms are small as befits an older house, staircases steep and narrow - which is exactly what I expected, a place with old-fashioned character, not some steel and glass post-modern morgue. Loved the big bath towels that actually dry you off! Rooms and hotel were super-clean, very good big breakfast in a pleasant room, welcoming, friendly family-run place with lovely staff who were very accommodating (thanks for the tips Dee), and full of info about places to eat/shop. Only things to be aware of - stairs are steep so not good for disabled, elderly on top floors. You can easily walk to it from the Barry train station in 10 minutes but it is up a steep hill so wear good shoes! Would love to see them open the guest lounge with its beautiful tiled fireplace - maybe someday In lieu, we sat outside with a glass of wine and just watched the world go by. Cardiff only 20 min or so by train for the shopping mavens so very convenient. Airport was about a 7 pound cab ride. Best thing I can say - we both would stay there again.

I chose the Aberthaw House Hotel based on the strength of the reviews here on Trip Advisor and was not disappointed. It is a family run hotel and all the people we met were extremely friendly and welcoming. We arrived two hours before check-in but were able to do so as the room was ready - a pleasent surpirse and an indication of the excellent service we were to get. Our room was clean, spacious and brightly decorated making it a very pleasent place to stay. Our room had a digital TV with all Freeview channels and a DVD player - a welcome bonus - and a lovely en-suite bathroom with a shower that had properly hot water - not something you always get at hotels! There was a good choice at breakfast; ceral, toast, omlette, porridge and the 'Full Welsh' cooked breakfast which my girlfriend will recommended very highly!! Service was excellent and accompanied by a smile at all times. If you go to Barry please stay at the Aberthaw House Hotel; you will ghave a lovely relaxed stay and I will be returning there next time I visit Barry.

The hotel is located about a 5 minute (up hill) walk from Barry train station, 10 minute walk from Barry town centre and 15-20 minute walk from Barry Island (you can also drive as there is plenty of parking or go by train), which I would highly recommend for couples and families. It has some lovely headlands to walk on and around that offer spectacular views of the Welsh coast, the Bristol Channel and of the beaches and bays on the Island. Whitmore Bay is the main beach - the one you'll have seen in Gavin and Stacey! - and it is impressive!! Long and wide there is room for hundreds of people to enjoy themselves and it is remarkably clean. Lifeguards are also on duty. Behind the beech there are penty of amusements, cafe's and chip shops as well as a 12 hole crazy golf course and the Pleasure Park. This however is looking very dated and quite run-down.

Gavin and Stacey fans will recognise many of the sites on the island, there are plenty of photogrpahs of the cast in Marco's cafe and Nessa's amusements (not its actual name, its in the western shelter on the sea front). Overall I would say that Barry is a lovely little place by the sea and the Island is well worth a Bank Holiday visit or a long weekend, for both couples and familes.

I booked to take my other half on the "Gavin & Stacey" tour as a birthday treat & decided to make a weekend of it. I booked to stay at the Aberthaw House Hotel based on its location & previous reviews. I'm so glad I did!! We were made extremely welcome from the moment we arrived. The hotel was spotlessly clean, well laid out & the four poster in our room was a lovely surprise. The bathroom was clean & fresh with an excellant shower. Our room had a flat screen TV with a built in DVD player but you couldn't beat the wonderful view from the huge windows! The hotel is located within walking distance, although a bit hilly, of the town, Barry Island & Barry station. If you travel by car, parking was not an issue for us. We managed to park right outside the hotel. There are a variety of restaurants & take aways within a few minutes walk from the hotel & it has its own restaurant. Although we never used the restaurant, the menu looked good & if breakfast was anything to go by you won't be disappointed!! There was a good choice on offer & plenty of it! The "Full Welsh" was exceptional! 2 clean plates on both days! ( I must apologise for the clean marmalade pot as well, but I couldn't help myself! It's delicious!!) The Ladies that looked after us were friendly, funny & attentive, without being overpowering, with an excellent local knowledge & sense of pride that they are keen to share. We genuinely have nothing bad to say about the hotel or our hosts. Thanks for a wonderful weekend! Very highly recommended!!

Room Tip: We had room 2. It is a good sized, well laid out room with lovely views across Barry & the Bay.

The hostesses at Aberthaw were wonderful! They gave us great recommendations for the area, and were very nice to chat with. The room was very enjoyable to stay in and the bathroom clean and bright. We stayed in the top floor with the bump-out windows which let in lots of sunlight in the morning. We had a four-poster bed and the linens were very clean and crisp. Breakfast was plentiful with lots of choices--my recommendation is the full Welsh breakfast for newcomers.

We found this hotel by chance, But what a find it turned out to be, We have never stayed in a hotel before and made to feel so welcome, The room was clean and bright and just like home from home, the linen in the room was clean and fresh and a welcome change to most hotels. The stay was so good it is going to be a regular port of call on our journeys to Barry. The breakfast was so good and the home made marmalade is to die for. The staff made a point of making conversation and on our departure we felt as if we had known them for ages, We will be back soon....
