Disappointing. We had previously stayed in 2 excellent B & Bs in the town - by comparison the White Lion was overpriced. Clean but decoration very shabby. Locally produced food not much evident, little vegetarian choice. No recycling seems to be done and little attempts at environmentally friendly activity - disgrace in an Eco-town like Machynlleth.

We had just driven the 400 miles from Edinburgh and we itching to get out on our mountain bikes up the hills and in to the mud. The hotel is a good fairly basic Town Centre Inn. Creaky floor boards and uneven floors. All steeped in history with low beams. Lots of good cheap food and local Ales and slap bang in the middle of the town too. All the rooms we hired had different paint and wall paper schemes and the carpets were all well used. Just the way we like it. As tight Scotsmen we will not pay for gold taps and crystal glasses when we just need something good and cheap.
The rooms are a good size, easily coping with all out mountain biking gear and lots of radiators around to dry out shoes and socks. On our 2nd stay we hired the huge family room that coped with the 4 of us and muddy gear with ease. The bar was busy, locals blethering with visitors switching from English to Welsh mid sentence. A decent menu kept us in for the evening meals finishing it off with local beers. Large quantities of tasty home cooked food. Perfect.
The beds comfy and the rooms warm. We all slept well, apart from one who was awoken every hour by the town clock chiming away outside. A good breakfast got us ready for the days cycling, and the memory of the previous nights meal inspired us to keep on going and to return safely and hungry.
The price was around £25 per person per night (January) which is probably the best value we have ever had on a cycling weekend. The staff are friendly and the hotel warm and cosy. The chef did look a bit like an extra from the Munsters, but then we did ask for a super early breakfast as were going to tackle a particularly gnarly days long cycle, so he was probably still half asleep!
I expect the White Lion will interest mountain bikers who require good basic and fairly well priced accommodation. Motorcyclists too will like it as they didn’t seem to have an anti leathers policy, and the roads here would be a dream. The hotel has a car park at the rear which is overlooked by a few of the rooms. Very friendly staff, we felt like we already knew them from somewhere else, or they must fancy muddy Scotsman !!
We have recommended the White Lion, we have returned and are planning our 3rd trip soon. If you want posh and fancy go elsewhere. The White Lion is good old fashioned Town Centre Inn value. Great!

  • Liked — warm friendly good value comfy beds good sized rooms good bar
  • Disliked — traffic noise and town clock, the hotel is the centre of town

This local pub/hotel is overpriced. The double room, for which I paid £65 B&B, needed decorating, the two narrow single beds were hard and the window would not close. Cheaply furnished but clean. Service and meals were good. Bar area upholstery is dirty and needs replacing. Dogs allowed in without leads.
