We totally regret booking this hotel without researching it first. We stayed here between Xmas and New Year expecting a quiet relaxing couple of days away without the children. We had paid £150 for a superior room despite on their website saying it was £120 in Dec (after being told that it was more during the Xmas period for some reason).
Started off promising with a large driveway leading up to a very impressive looking hotel from the outside. Whilst walking up to our room we noticed despite a very grand looking staircase that the handrail was hanging off the wall. Despite us arriving at 3pm, there were linen room doors open and various items that the cleaners had left lying around, throughout the dingy corridors. Our room was old fashioned and grubby like the rest of the building, and it was absolutely freezing! Rang the receptionist who told us that heating was on a timer but she'd put it on for us! At £150 a night, I think the least you can expect when you arrive is a warm room in the middle of Winter! The bathroom had some mould on the tiles and there were tiles missing from either side of the toilet. There were some items of rubbish left underneath the tv stand so it obviously wasn't cleaned to a high standard.
Decided to go and use the pool and spa whilst the heating warmed up - what a joke. The changing rooms were filthy and appalling. The pool was tiny and full of children diving in and out of it including the jacuzzi. There were fully clothed adults with their shoes on standing alongside it. Ok, this is not the hotel's fault that the guests were not hygenic but they could have somebody to keep an eye on what is going on in there, considering it is advertised as a Spa hotel. We were expecting to go and have a relax but that was impossible so didn't stay in there for more than 15 mins before we made a quick getaway.
Had booked for dinner, but after seeing the overpriced menu and having a drink in the bar we cancelled. Again children running riot throughout the bar area, which incidentally was very outdated with not very pleasant surroundings. We went to the Dial Inn just at the end of the road and had a fabulous meal there instead.
The bed was awful - woke up with terrible backache. The breakfast itself was nice, not much choice but ok, but it was like being in somebody's sitting room at a wake! It was too quiet and formal and also the waitress appeared to not speak a word of English so she showed us the plates so we could choose which was our cooked breakfast. We couldn't wait to get out of there so left earlier than checkout time.
