We were looking for a location that could seat 16 people for family get together to celebrate my mothers birthday, i enquired about a gluten free menu which they do have, anyway so I pre booked over the phone on the Wednesday, they could accommodate us by assembling several tables together, great. On the Thursday night we decided to call into the oyster catcher for a bite to eat as we were in the area, our first impressions were very good it certainly looks the part, very modern, Wills Bar on the ground floor also looks very trendy however we didn't go in for a drink. We proper struggled to find anything that appealed to us on the menu including the specials board, we played safe and both had haddock and chips, Hmm! "Mum and dad are going to find it difficult to choose anything appealing to eat of this menu" we commented. The fish we had was at best ok the chips were not as good, the home made tartare sauce dry! We enquired about the table we had booked for the coming Sunday and the menu, they assured us that the specials board on Sunday captured Sunday lunch i.e. roast beef etc.
So we kept the booking for 16, Sunday came we were seated at 2pm only to be told that the would be a considerable wait for the food as they had been "hammered" this lunch time, oh ok?
The waitress very politely informed us that there was no lamb, oh ok! Beef it is then, she returned to announce no beef, oh! I knew what was coming, mum and dad would order the haddock, as nothing else really appeals (don't know why, maybe its me but the menu really lets the place down) any way guess what only 4 haddock left, a few minutes later I decided to speak to Charlotte the maitre d, to request the 4 haddock be reserved whilst the rest of the party chose what to order, I have to say that she was very polite and professional in her response to me, I actually felt quite sorry for her.
She did allow a free round of drinks as an apology (thank you) my wine came and I had to clean the glass the attention to detail by the staff is lacking the approach and attitude by the some not all of the waitresses was at times rude and arrogant, not very courteous and there is no finesse during service, my food was cold, the bed of mash was bland, my first thoughts were that it was powdered smash (it wasn't , but tasted powdery) the lamb (not off the specials board) was not pink, as ordered, over cooked but too much hassle to get it changed. I don't get chance to speak with my sister very often and didn't during the meal because she mentioned the word Bacon 42 times in no less than 2 minuets, the wet stodgy ham and pineapple pizza she was attempting to eat had bacon on it, they had obviously run out of ham! I could go on, we could nit pick and all day but just made the most of our time together, on leaving (I think the head waitress and her accomplice) were rude and challenged us for not pre-ordering the food that we wanted off the specials board, before we got there on the Sunday, WTF,We were not told we needed to, and it is a restaurant.....
My sister had an interesting conversation with the same pair of waitresses about bacon, apparently bacon (with the rind still on it) is the same as ham, thats a new one!
The place needs a manager, someone who is wiling and able to lead and set an example to the apprentices and staff, in the current economic climate repeat business is key, good or bad press is exponential there was 16 of us if we all tell 10 people! You know how it goes, its a shame but a big shake up must be required if this establishment is to become everything it is trying to be. If I were to be challenged on my views I would say that, either the repeat business if their is any, must be devoid of taste buds and or need to get out more!
Nice location, cool building fabulous decking, no attention to detail, the menu is boring and not restaurant standard, the food nicely presented however bland and poorly cooked, service in five words ' they haven't got a clue'.
