Was really looking forward to staying at this hotel, its location is fantastic and a lot of money has been spent in renovation and restoration. We did request a Menai Straits view from our bedroom and we did get one but at the side, which was disappointing. The room (Bangor), although nicely decorated and furnished (with a nice wet room located in a turret), it was very small and we couldn't help thinking that we'd been taken for a ride at £190 for one night bed and breakfast. Maybe it was due to us booking it on line? For this sort of money we would have expected a larger room and certainly a full view of the Menai Straits. Also, although we were aware the hotel didn't have a beauty spa and small swimming pool at least, this is normally the case with 5 Star hotels.
We were told that dinner would either be a barbeque (weather not too good) or dining with 20 other guests staying in the hotel. It was not possible to have a table for two (so much for a romantic break). Although it was a nice touch that the chef came in to announce each course and to explain how he'd cooked it and what was in it, after 5 courses we went to bed hungry and I was glad that I found a muesli bar in my bag to have with a cup of tea before going to bed. At £110 for two for dinner again we felt that we'd been taken for a ride. Although a ride into town by taxi to eat would have been cheaper. Nevertheless, we looked forward to a cooked breakfast like never before. However we were again disappointed with the breakfast. I've noted that complaints about the breakfast at this hotel seems to be a theme on trip advisor feedback and you would have thought that the hotel would have taken this feedback on board, but they haven't. In all the years of travelling I have never experienced such a poor selection for breakfast, and the cooked breakfast that was served to you on a plate only had one piece of bacon, a tablespoon of scambled egg and beans, one sausage, four halves of mushrooms, half a tomato and they'd even cut a piece of black pudding in half. All the other components of breakfast, juices, cereals, chopped fruit, yoghurt etc., was laid out on a large round table. The one thing that I was astonished about was that the cheese and cold meats were laid out on a piece of slate. This was meant to look nice, but in fact it was not only unhygienic but verging on unhealthy as these items (as well as the yoghurt etc) should have been kept under cover and chilled. All the food was fully exposed and being a warm morning there were flies around.
All in all a very expensive (including room, dinner, two drinks at the bar and a bottle of £25 wine with dinner) one night stay totalling £335, with the added insult of coming away from dinner and breakfast hungry.
I await to see if any subsequent feedback on Trip Advisor reflects some action by the hotel to address the obvious issue about breakfast, and perhaps for them to increase their portion size for dinner, fine dining doesn't always mean tiny portions.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review of Plas Rhianfa.
I understand that you thought the room was expensive, but this is mainly due to the time of the year as it is the summer holidays and Anglesey is popular because of its idyllic beaches and lovely mountain setting. Furthermore, the week that you stayed was also extremely popular due to the 'Plas Rhianfa Menai Regatta' which is a further attraction to the Island as many guests visit the island to enjoy the sailing.
I do apologise if you left the dinner table feeling hungry. Over the last few months we have listened to our guests and increased the size of the portions, especially with the main course with additional vegetables etc. I shall therefore raise your comment with my head chef as it is our intention to ensure that guests leave the table feeling satisfied and that they have enjoyed their evening.
In terms of breakfast, as a company we are undertaking a review of breakfast and I will be reviewing the presentation of the continental buffet which will include containers. Going forward, guests who stay in the Chateau will enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast, so it is my intention that it presents nicely. For reassurance, a full Welsh breakfast will also be available for a reasonable £9 per person.
I wish we had the opportunity to have discussed the points raised during the stay, however, you are welcome to call me directly if you wish.
With kind regards,
