“Expectations high experience disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013

Lovely building and wonderful setting. Clearly an awful lot of money and effort has been lavished on this place. It’s let down badly by a number (not all) of poorly trained and disinterested staff. The standard of finish and quality of workmanship in our room, the bathroom in particular, is poor for a hotel purporting to be 5 star – and that’s crazy given the amount they must have spent on furnishings and so on. And I have never seen such badly stained stair carpets – that the management and staff tolerate that tells it all, and it’s only been open a year or so. So, in the context of 5 star, a few examples - no porter or any help offered with luggage, pretty offhand welcome at reception, breakfast buffet worse than many budget hotels, bathroom taps incorrectly marked (H is for cold!), emergency escape chart in the room for the wrong floor, and I could go on. The expectation is set high by all the publicity – the experience is a big disappointment, and it could be so good if managed properly. On a positive note the public rooms are excellent, we slept well in a comfortable bed, and we enjoyed walking the grounds - but 5*, forget it

We loved how this beautiful hotel was decorated with some lovely quirky nooks making use of all its space in a really creative way. Our room was a standard one and was large, clean and nicely decorated - we certainly did not feel like we were taking a cheap option! The staff were wonderfully helpful and quick to offer their assistance. Then there was the chateau dining experience which was absolutely incredible. The chef was great particularly for someone so young! The food was delicious and I came away feeling inspired and perfectly sated.

I particularly loved how proud of this hotel the locals of Beamaris were. Everyone we spoke to had complementary things to say about the hotel itself and the people that work there.

I can't wait to go back!

We stayed here for two nights for our wedding anniversary. We partook in the Chateau Dining Experience on the first night and weren't disappointed with the food. We were also blessed with our company as two lovely couples joined us and the conversation flowed well. The following day we took a trip round Beaumaris, Menai Bridge and Rhosneigr which were all very picturesque. We then drove about 20 or 30 minutes to Llandudno which is a fabulous seaside town with lots to offer and some fantastic views. We returned to the hotel to relax in the gardens and soak up the atmosphere. As we'd already dined in the night before we took a five minute taxi ride to Menai Bridge Town for dinner. All in all a fantastic weekend break made more pleasant by the helpful staff and amazing views at Plas Rhianfa.

Booked a standard room and on arrival were upgraded to "The Menai Suite". Room was impressive, light, bright and furnished to a high standard. The staff were helpful and polite throughout. Breakfast was well cooked, plentiful and had good variety. Grounds were beautiful , tennis available and a well stocked indoor games room would be fab if the weather was poor or in the evening.
Only small-niggle is that to dine in the evening you have to have the Chateau dining experience. As we were away from our children for our first weekend break in seventeen years we didn't want to sit with strangers and so we were forced to get a taxi out to Beaumaris .
Overall a real five star experience.

This hotel has such an impressive location overlooking the Menai Straits and is equally pleasing inside and out. Our Attic floor bedroom was newly carpeted with a huge bed and an amazing turret bathroom although quite why the wetroom had three showers, is still beyond me.
Many of the staff were young (as mentioned in another review) but they were enthusiastic and keen to please. One evening the manager sat down with us and gave us some of the history of the house and also gave us some pointers about the main places of interest on the island.
There being only 16 bedrooms but lots of different sitting areas- Games room, Music room etc.- you can easily keep your own company if you wish.
The weather was superb during our visit so we could enjoy the varied outdoor spaces and just soak up the tranquil surroundings.
Breakfast was adequate, not an exhaustive choice, but something for everyone. We did not take the evening meal as we wanted to sample the restaurants round about.
Every place has its faults, nowhere is perfect but you are a tough cookie to please if you are critical of Plas Rhianfa. Just go and enjoy it.

This is a fab hotel with great views over the Menai straits. Stayed in The Duchess Suite which is amazing with it's stand alone bath in the window with stunning views, well worth the extra.
It's a bit isolated so you can't really go for a walk at night and it's not good for people with walking difficulties due to the number of stairs, but it's still a lovely place.
However, this is not the place to come if you want an intimate dinner for two, the only food available at night is the Chateau Dining Experience, this is a superb way to meet other guests but is not so good if you have problems with meeting people. Don't get me wrong, the food is great but you don't always want the "full monty" and you do have to get in your car to go and eat elsewear. Also breakfast is a bit hit and miss, it's not the best breakfast layout i have seen and also it depends on the number of guests staying as to how much choice there is.
One problem was that there was no hand soap in bathrooms and on speaking to other guests there was no soap in their rooms either.
All in all, i had a wonderful visit, the staff were friendly, attentive and yes i will return, probably in the autumn and take in those stunning views

Room Tip: Simple, the more you pay the more you get Principle suites are fantastic

Dear 660Lindy,

Thank you for your recent review, I am delighted that you had a wonderful visit.

I would agree that the Duchess Suite is a lovely room, and the Chateau Dining Experience is superb for a dining experience and for engaging with fellow guests.

I am sorry that we ran out of the Aspray Soap during your stay, annoyingly the delivery arrived shortly after the weekend but I do apologise that it was missing.

With Autumn around the corner, we look forward to seeing you again soon.

With best wishes,

Martin

Myself and my Boyfriend spent the night at Plas Rhianfa in June andfound it absolutely fabulous. We were checked in then shown personally to our room which had one of the brilliant turret bathrooms. There wasn't any soap available but we just used the shower gel and reported this to reception when we were checking out.

You can basically go anywhere in the hotel provided it isn't marked as private or a bedroom and there are so many nooks and crannies to explore continually turning up surprises. There are 4 bars - the main bar near reception then 3 others next to the games room, sun room and the wine cave. If there is no one available then you just have to phone reception and someone will come down. When we arrived they were in the middle of the afternoon tea session so some of the rooms (Drawing Room and Music Room) were taken up with people eating but there were plenty of other places to explore first. There is a gym available with various equipment and also a hot tub which we used. Lovely location with the doors open overlooking the Menai Strait. The Games room has a pool table and various board games such as chess, monopoly etc available to play.

We decided not to eat in the hotel as they only do the Chateau Dining Experience where all the dinner guests sit down to eat together and is quite expensive at £55 per person. The breakfast was very nice though, a selection of juices, cereals, danish patries to start. You then order your coffee/tea, eggs and toast and help yourself to the remainder of any cooked breakfast you want from the serving dishes on the main table.

All the staff we found to be friendly and attentive without being intrusive.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and hope to return in the future.

Room Tip: Room 4 has one of the turret bathrooms. The room is at the side of the hotel so the room is over th...

Dear JamSardine,

Thank you for writing such a superb review of Plas Rhianfa from your recent stay in Anglesley.

I am delighted that you had time to explore the Chateau and discover all the different rooms and aspects. Sometimes with short visits you don't always have the time to explore, but I think you found every room from the hot tub with the stunning views over the Menai Straits to the Music room with grand ceiling!

I am sorry that we ran short of our Aspray soap, we had experienced a delay in their delivery which arrived shortly after the weekend.

I am glad that you enjoyed your breakfast, and look forward to welcoming you back soon for another relaxing break.

With best wishes,

Martin
