My wife & I made a 20 mile detour to visit The Straits for the first time because we knew of it’s origins.
Until a few years ago, it had been a popular and successful restaurant known as Ruby’s, but the original owner sold out, and the new owners where not up to the task and the reputation and the business floundered. The original owner however remained the landlord, and he is none other than the chef/owner of ‘The Marsh Cat’ at Parkgate in Cheshire / Wirral, very possibly the best restaurant in the region. We learned of ‘The Straits’ opening from our visits to ‘The Marsh Cat’ because it was the original owners son, an experienced chef in his own right, going out on his own and he took on the lease in April 2009.
We hoped it might have been as good as the Marsh Cat, but we found it was even better.
Local produce, clean, amazingly attentive staff, and a set 2 course meal at £13.95. No problem switching from starter & main, to main & pudding at this price. (A la carte options are also available.) My wife had the Lamb Henry, and described at perfect, and I had a Cajun style chicken which was a delight. Do not confuse this place with comments about ‘Ruby’s. It is in a different class.
