“Verry Nice Meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2012

When i came to the royal madoc Hotel for food with my husband we were served by the most lovely bar maid with curly hair, then when the meal was searved the owner Sue which is verry frendly and makes you feel verry welcome came up to us and talked to us since we have not been to this area before, then the owners son Harry came down a verry nice boy verry polite and well knolage of the area. The Food was Spectacular up to a verry high standard the night affter i went to the one over the road called the Golden Fleece and the Madoc had a much better variaty, better Food and Price. Over all i think that if you do go down to the Tremadog area you should come to this Hotel next time i will be comeing to stay!!

For the price of £55 per night for the two of us this is a great value for money hotel, everything was clean, the bed was comfy and the breakfast was brilliant.
Sue the owner gave us a warm welcome offering her assistance in anything we needed.
All the staff are very friendly, the ale and food is great, and the area is beautiful...
Many thanks x

Room Tip: just ask for best available for the price

My wife and I stayed at the Royal Madoc for two nights (Thu-Sat) and really enjoyed our stay. The staff were friendly and helpful, the full English (Welsh!!) breakfast hot, tasty and a good sized portions. We ate in the restaurant, and were no strangers to the bar on both nights, and again, no complaints about the food (except from my wife who thought the portions were too big!!) I had the Rump and the Sirloin, juicy, tasty, and cooked to the degree asked for, with fresh made chips and a different tossed salad each night, the food at the Madoc is cheaper than the other 3 establishments in the village square, but as we only ate at the Madoc , cannot comment on those, but both the other pubs like the Madoc were friendly, cosy and serve a variety of beers and lagers each with a couple of traditional hand drawn real ales. (Robinsons Golden Dragon and Unicorn at the Madoc, Purple Moose Snowdonia ale at the "Union Inn"and "Golden Fleece", plus Davenports Lone Wolf and Shepard Neame Spitfire.

Any previous posts which complained that the locals speak Welsh, obviously don't realise that it's the first language of 70% of the country, more so in the north, and is compulsory in schools. Everyone will immediately switch to English if you ask a question or try to join a conversation, try getting that reaction in France!!

We were included in conversations with the staff and locals in the Madoc Bar,and as it was Rugby World Cup, Saturdays 9.00 am match was a highlight (You were robbed boys!!) Thanks to Sue and the staff (Nick, Mags, Iewan etc) for a enjoyable stay, they are really trying to make a go of it .

OK it requires some work, My family and I stayed three days this week and enjoyed ourselves. The English breakfast was excellent, The staff attentive. I seen a complaint about traffic noise and the was some BUT the road is being Bypassed in the next week or so and it will make it like a village. Regarding up-dating I spoke to the staff because the bath tap fell off. And the plumbing and other work has been contracted. We slept well ,Plenty of very hot water and the Breakfast kept us going all day.
Of course you can find more salubrious places at high cost, and if you try and find cheap B&B you might find yourself sleeping in your car, Porthmadog is a very interesting place to visit.

Stayed here with family for a weekend in September. We'd read the other reviews, and we found that the rooms do need a really thorough refurb. The new managers/owners are quick to point out they’ve only been in since January (so nine months now) and they are doing the hotel up bit by bit. However, it was cheap and nothing was dangerous so we didn't mind too much.

The beds were clean and comfortable but the rooms could have been cleaner - cobwebs and black shower grouting – nothing a deep clean shouldn’t shift. On the Sunday morning we noticed food debris on the floor from the night before. The cooked breakfast was price appropriate and cooked fresh. The staff were friendly. The bar when full of locals wasn’t.

My main gripes were the broken bathroom door, the dodgy water pressure (which can't be helped until new pumps are fitted apparently) and being woken up at 3am on Sunday morning by the people living above the hotel (and I'm a fairly deep sleeper). I also question the wisdom of living above a hotel with three dogs – the noise they make running up and down the stairs is, well, just plain loud.

I guess the devil really is in the detail here.

Room Tip: I would not choose room 12, but Pete who stays there all week thinks that one is the best. Apparentl...
