Wanting to do something slightly different with our UK holiday this year and after identifying a trip back to North Wales the wife went and booked one of the 15 self catering cottages that are available in Portmeirion.
I was initially a bit non plussed, as an equivalent sized self catering cottage in one of the nearby Snowdonian villages would have been at least 25% cheaper, but I have to say, as usual, she was spot on and it was an excellent choice.
Battery cottage is located on Battery Square in the Portmeirion village and is a 5 bed accommodation on the 1st and 2nd floors above the spa building. The kitchen diner , lounge , main double bedroom with en suite and one bathroom is on the first floor and then an additional twin and single and 2nd bathroom are on the 2nd floor. The front overlooks the square with all the bustling tourists outside, but the back, including the lounge , kitchen diner and more importantly the main double bedroom and our private outside balcony all had fantastic views of the Afon Crigyll estuary.
First experience of spending a weeks holiday in a major tourist attraction and it was quite fun. The small negatives were that you awoke to the sounds of the staff preparing to open all the shops for the days trade and you had to park your car well away from the cottage on the village perimeter, and then try not to run over any tourists when leaving for the day. But the massive positive is that out of hours you have the place to yourself and it was quite magical to wander around the village early in the morning and late in the evening when no one else was there. And be able to take the forest walk and the estuary walk of an evening with only a couple of other guests from the cottages and hotel for company was quite wonderful, especially traversing the estuary when the tide was out.
The service levels we received were good as well. We arrived at the start of the hot spell and on entering the cottage we had a wasp infection in the top floor bathroom that had come from a nest in the eves above. But one call to the reception in the castle and the duty manager appeared within minutes and Rentokill were around first thing on the next morning to sort it out.
Yes we could have taken a lower cost standard farm cottage, but then we would have missed out on a magical week in Portmeirion and the memories of sitting out each morning with views of the Afon Crigyll estuary to die for.
Battery cottage sleeps 5 and for a family of 2 old adults and two young adults it was perfect.
