“First class dining”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 16, 2013

We went en fam here over the weekend. It was for my wifes birthday. Our table of 5 were the first to find the restaurant (speaking of which it is easy to miss as the sign for Steppes Farm cottages is more dominant, it's the same place!) that evening. The waiting staff were quick to take our drinks orders and settle us on the comfy sofa. The canapés were absolutely delicious and a welcome surprise. We were shown to our table. The restaurant is very intimate and the wood beams are beautiful and the lighting atmospheric. The amuse bouche was a beautiful wild mushroom veloute with very interesting texture of sea-salt running though it, and truffle oil. Our starters arrived in a timely fashion and were excellently prepared and presented and were not tiny portions which given our day was welcome. The duck salad was extremely good. Mot of us had lamb for the main because of the low food miles associated with the dish. It was cooked beautifully and presented very elegantly without too much fuss.... the puddings were to die for, and their hand-made chocolate truffles also looked very good as an alternative.
Our first experience of the Stonemill, being familiar with a few other local restaurants. It wont be our last visit.

“What an amazing place !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2013

What a find ! Have passed this place a couple of times on the old road to Monmouth and after reading other excellent reviews decided to book for sunday lunch today. What a fabulous venue ! In a beautiful setting,as you drive in you are faced with beautiful character cottages, which they rent out apparently,a quaint bed and breakfast, the lovely family home of the owners and a stunning outdoor space with lovely gardens and also a wedding marquee beyond a gate...what an absolute gem of a place. We walked up the steps to the restaurant which is a wonderfully and sympathetically restored barn conversion full of character. We were welcomed by a friendly face behind the bar, ordered drinks while sat on the comfy sofas and perused the excellent menu. The Stonemill has a wonderful laid back atmosphere, was very busy here today with a couple of large family celebrations going on. Our table was situated on the mezzanine above the main restaurant area. We were served by very friendly and cheerful staff and were very pleased with our sunday lunch of homemade mushroom soup with truffle oil.goats cheese bruschetta with tomato and pesto to start. Beautifully roasted local beef with all the trimmings and desserts of a gorgeous dark chocolate pave with marsapone cream and a traditional apple and rhubarb crumble and custard. Sunday lunch reasonable at &17.50.feach for three courses,we could not fault it at all and will definately return...perhaps stay overnight in one of the delightful little cottages ! Highly recommended !

“Very pleasant lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

We had decided to try lunch here having passed it a few months ago, my family live in the nearby town of Monmouth. We went lunchtime on a Saturday. There were a good number of tables occupied although it was not full. Atmosphere was subdued but pleasant. Staff are very friendly and the menu, set lunch for £13.95 2 courses was well thought out. There are many other options from their "day" menu ie light lunches, sandwiches. Starters of smoked salmon, goats cheese and spring soup (there were 3 of us) were all well done and tasty. We all had the shoulder of lamb for mains which again was well cooked and presented. The pudding menu looked enticing but we shared a cheese board. All in all a very pleasant lunch, very good value for money and a nice setting.

“A surprising gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013 via mobile

Slightly alarmed to discover only 2 tables of 2 booked on a Thursday night - you lot are missing a trick! Surroundings and atmosphere are fantastic, food delicious - and reasonable - what a nice place - go and enjoy it
