I've not yet given a 5-blob rating for UK accommodation so you can conclude I was very impressed by our one night stay at this charming 'restaurant with rooms'. The ambience from the moment we arrived was sincerely welcoming and relaxed (and gently eccentric in a uniquely enjoyable British way). This is obviously a family run concern and everyone, but everyone, went out of their way to ensure we had an ideal stay with everything that we wanted - not obtrusively, and with none of that bogus fawning you get at the famous names either. There are few hotels, never mind B&Bs, where the staff will carry your luggage to your room, demonstrate how to operate the shower and TV, provide a room tray with teas/coffees/mineral water/biscuits, free Wi-fi, and include a complimentary newspaper at breakfast - and what a magnificent 'full english' breakfast! - with excellent espresso. Our evening meal was also delicious, very reasonably priced, and chef Paul(?) readily cooked us items off-menu; thank you to him - Mrs cheepskate particularly recommends his rack of local lamb. The wine list is not huge but for this couple it had enough choice and was fairly priced.
Negatives: all nit-picking details, e.g with the high quality of restaurant furnishings, service, and food, cotton rather than paper napkins would have seemed more apprpriate; car parking is a pay & display 100 metres away; rooms at the front face the surprisingly busy St John's St. and the 'beer garden' of the adjacent wetherspoons pub.
This is an excellent place to base a visit to Monmouth and I would recommend it to those who value genuine hospitality at an affordable price. I sincerely wish all at The Coach House continuing success – they have an exceptional establishment and they really deserve it.
Rooms at the back are quieter than those at the front
