“Feel like Royalty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2011

We have just had a most fantastic break at this wonderful castle. We received a very warm welcome from the owners, along with an interesting tour. We have read some negative reviews about the hosts and can only assume these people were from London, (as we are), where taking the time to be friendly and polite is often frowned upon (and seen as a waste of time). We stayed in the north tower apartment, which was extremely spacious. The apartment was beautifully decorated and had wonderful views of the gardens and landscape beyond.
We enjoyed walks in the vast grounds and had a really romantic weekend. We felt like William and Kate but without the paparazzi!

Room Tip: Perfectly located for a trip to Snowdon.

It was reassuring that after being warmly and efficiently welcomed in, my wife and I felt we were amongst understandable and approachable friends. Which proved to be the case for the rest of our enjoyable stay.
The spacious apartment was comfortable, convenient and pleasing to the taste, providing an atmosphere that complimented the style of the castle, with a touch of nostalgia from bygone days, when everything seemed to be so much more relaxed.
We enjoyed the peace and quiet, with the freedom and relaxation from daily routine. Also, other guests we saw seemed very contented.
We wholeheartedly agree with the good reviews and we cannot understand how the anger and personal animosity generated by an earlier respondent (some years ago but still on your site) could possibly apply to such a wonderful environment and especially towards such naturally pleasant and hospitable hosts. Did they perhaps mistakenly expect a 5 star hotel with 24 hour service, rather than the self catering of Bryn Bras. Their criticism seems so unjustified and cruel that my Wife and felt compelled to write our reviews to you.

I was a little nervous about spending a week at this location after reading the other reviews, but am extremely glad that we went anyway. Our rooms were beautiful, comfortable and almost as large as our 3 bedroom house. The owners were rightfully proud of their property and we were glad to take the tour. I spent several hours talking to the husband. Their recommendations of sights to see were helpful and we enjoyed them all. We have recommended this propery to our friends and will stay there again if we are ever in the area. Just remember that respect garners respect and you too can enjoy this memorable location.

I cannot agree with the other reviewers.

This is a unique place to stay and offered great accommodation, the owners are Genteel British folk, accept that and you'll do OK.

put a bit of steel into your glare for Claptons sake!

Possibly if you've been "molly-coddled" (railroaded for our colonial colleagues) by plush but utterly impersonal hotels like the Hiltons in the past then this will be a short, sharp, shock.

But if you want to live the life of a lord, for just a short time, ten this place has it.

Great locations, fantastic history (where else can you sleep in the same room that Lloyd George often visited?) AND all the faclities you need.

If you bring a bad attitude with you, you'll see it in the mirror.

Enjoy!

We entirely agree with the very negative review dated January 2007.
This accommodation leaves much to be desired and certainly does NOT live up to the very attractive contents of the Bryn Bras Castle web site.

  • Liked — The very attractive web site

I recently discovered the reviews on this site about Bryn Bras Castle in North Wales and very much wish I had done so earlier. Our stay was for 4 nights last September after being seduced by the glowing description of the place on the Bryn Bras website which boldly states that
“Thought and care have been taken in providing plenty of space with modern comforts and conveniences, yet, at the same time respecting the integrity, elegance and style of this important Grade II* Listed Building. The collections of antiques throughout the Apartments create an individual atmosphere in each one and make them genuinely special. The decoration is in keeping with the Castle’s character with rich wallpapers and fabrics enhancing the furniture and furnishings.” All backed up by a Welsh Assembly Government 'VisitWales' five star rating. Couldn’t go wrong we thought.
We arrived quite late at about 7 in the evening after a long day, and were looking forward to getting in and preparing something to eat. We were met at the door by the owner who seemed slightly put out by the fact that we had parked right outside the entrance as it was raining heavily and we had no wish to get wetter than necessary whilst unloading.
We were ushered into an entrance hall where the grand tour of inspection (and instruction) began. By about 7:10pm we had admired all the lovely tourist leaflets, listened to the virtues of the many wonderful eateries in the area and been shown how to use the payphone (In case our mobile didn’t work no doubt).
From here we went up the very narrow steep stairway which was presumably the servant’s domain in days gone by. We were asked to be careful of the wet plaster on the wall which had been repaired after a previous guest had knocked out a piece whilst struggling with a suitcase in the confined space.
After a rambling route to our apartment, finally we arrived. In fairness it was spacious, but the collections of antiques were largely a collection of assorted rubbish to which we frankly we wouldn’t give house room. Much time was spent in the sitting room listening to explanations about the value of all the object,s with a long treatise concerning the wonderful local craftsman who had adorned every available surface with gold paint, and to be especially careful of the antique polyester curtains which on no account should be drawn lest they should fall apart. We were asked not to run around or jump up and down because of the valuable chandeliers in the rooms below (occupied by the owners I believe).
By about 7:30pm we had made it to the bedroom which, again, was a generous size, and the twin beds were probably the only saving grace of the property as they were very comfortable. Once more we endured the description of every piece of furniture and were shown the hair drier, which was also an antique.
7:40pm and on to the kitchen situated off the bedroom. More antiques to be found here too, cooker, fridge, dishwasher. Despite the apparent 5 stars there was no washing machine, not that we needed one, but I wonder about how the grading was arrived at. The fridge had not been put on prior to our arrival so as not to waste electricity in case we didn’t need to use it! We had a few frozen items in the car, and fortunately it was a chilly evening, but this was something never before encountered over many years of self catering. The dishwasher, which had two programs, on and off, took up a good few minutes to explain, although we had the distinct impression that she rather hoped that we wouldn’t be using it. The welcome basket was a bit sad, but it alone would have been preferable to the protracted welcome we endured.
It was now 7:50pm and the joke was wearing a bit thin, particularly after the instructions about making good use of the antique Henry vacuum cleaner which we wee proudly told had given sterling service over many years. We were shown to the piece de resistance, the vile green tiled art deco bathroom with mirrored ceiling, once used by the Price of Wales (Edward, that is, not Charles). I don’t suppose there were as many cracks in the tiles then as there are today, nor would he have been surprised at the absence of any form of shower facility (5 stars ?) or the fact that he could listen to the conversations of neighbouring guests having breakfast through the adjoining doorway. ( Hope they weren’t put of by my splashing about in the bath).
By 8:00pm we were alone, and able to start unloading the car, after promising to move it further down the drive afterwards.
On the plus side, the castle is in a beautiful location, with delightful grounds around which you can wander, but this alone would not be a good reason to stay there. If you do stay, be prepared to run the gauntlet of the owner popping up unexpectedly every time you come in or out, interrogating you about your plans. Allow lots of time for this, or else be prepared to be rude in making your excuses.
I think I can guarantee that we will not return. It is a pity because there is the potential for a wonderful experience in a beautiful part of the country. The Welsh accommodation grading system needs bringing up to English Tourist Board standards so that reliable comparisons can be made. I doubt that Bryn Bras would have made 3 stars under the ETB system. Only the prices are 5 star.

I have read the review of the people who stayed on 16 May 2006 and could not agree more. This woman is odd to say the least. We were staying for three nights and were given a patronising lecture on cleanliness. I do not expect to have to vacuum and disinfect after a stay of three nights (effectively two days). We left a day early. We left her a note pointing out that her attitude to cleanliness was overbearing and we did not feel relaxed. She replied but completely ignored the fact of our early departure and did not even apologise. We will definitely not be staying here again. 5 Welsh dragons? Meaningless.
