Me and my boyfriend stayed here for two nights last weekend. We was both pleasantly surprised by all the facilities the island has to offer and thought it was fantastic that they had a shop a camp shop a pub and a cafe. However ye cafe is very expensive and the food is not great. But it was ok for us. It filled a hole!
We went during school holidays an my oh my it was busy. I would love to go back again when it is quieter as we had to pitch up very far out. They're are many diferent types of pitches you can go for we decided to stay in the woods which was more spread out and sheltered firm the cold

This is a large camp site and is inexpensive. our family has camped here for years and other places just disappoint. There are troubles on all camp sites but the owners do their best, after all it's not them causing trouble. Ive camped and stayed in the flats and have never had any grumpy staff, all very nice....a few campers with bad attitudes but I'm reckoning that's part of their nature wherever they are.
For me it is one of the best places and one of the most beautiful.

Room Tip: If you want five star camping, go to Europe, this is a lovely place but has restrictions because it...

My partner and I have been to Shell Island three times now; the most recent was ten days at the start of July 2012. I have no complaint with this campsite and think it’s one of the best I’ve been to and we go to Wales at least once a year.
On reading some of the reviews below I must agree, for the biggest campsite in Europe only 8 men 8 woman showers is not a lot but I personally have never had a problem with this as we stagger when we go to the shower and ya at peak times I’m sure they get busy. This year we got a good spot near one of the chalet to the left of the shower block and found this was a good spot looking out to sea, we saw some good sunsets and a Dolphin and seals as the tide came in.
We are more natural campers in that we don’t go for the entertainment that they can provide so never went to the onsite pub or café so can’t comment on them and never had any issues with the onsite shops which provide all the essentials you need, although bought a lot of thing while out and about.
The beach is nice, a good rock pool area then a beach area which is a big beach so can find secluded spots. There are large sand dunes to amuse yourself with running up and falling down them. On walking about a mile or so up the beach we saw a sign so walked over to investigate, when my partner stated that there was a man sat on the top of a sand dune with no cloths on to which there was. Getting closer to the sign we found the sign stating that nude bathing was permitted beyond the sign which we had a chuckle about and headed back before the naked man thought we was going to join him.
We had five days on our own then drove back home for the night leaving the tent at Shell Island then returned with our granddaughter for four nights. My partner was worried about leaving the tent and the content unattended but nothing was touch while we had gone. Our granddaughter loved it especially crabbing and collecting shells which she brought a lot of them back with us.
I would recommend this campsite to families and couples and it has something for every ones wants and needs, care needs to be taken on windy days and with any campsite camping on hills or by the sea can get windy.

Shell island was easy to find and in a good location when the road wasn't flooded.

Car park was reasonable cost at £5 for the whole day, good facilities, clean toilets.

There were less shells than expected, but we did see some cool things.

Clean beach, nice rock pools, great for kids, there were dogs on the beach so I assume dogs were aloud.

This site is 300 acres, the largest campsite in europe, yet has only one shower block, and no nearly enough toilets!! It only costs £7.50 per persn in high season which is great for its location. It costs £5 for a day visit, but if you decide to stay overnight, like we did, they will take the £5 off your total cost.

You can park in any area, we parked at the left hand side. When we took a walk to the other side, near the harbour, there was a few large noisey groups. There are beach views, dunes, harbour views and more secluded areas also.

It has a main shower block near the enterance, and a main toilet block abit further along. However if you travel further into the site there are only a couple of porta loos dotted around. They definately need to spend ore money on facilities. The toilets in the middle have a sensor light, so when I went at around 930pm it was just getting dark, but not dark enough for the sensors to work. So it was nearly pitch dark inside the toilet itself.

There is a tavern, with a tv and pool table etc. They also sell take-out alcohol in here. Fairy average prices, £5.30 for a pint and a lemonade.

The 'restaurant' has a very poor selection of food and is quite expensive, £6.25 for a kids meal! They have homemade pizzas, a 9" and 12", however we noticed that they charge more for the larger size, even though its just the same sized dough, just rolled out further. So the 9" is a deep dish and the 12" is thin based!! Very basic inside - lucozade bottle used for a salt shaker for example.

Supermarket - well stocked with all basic camping food, they also have a selection of meat supplied by local butchers.
Camping shop - Everything you could possibly need for a camping trip, maybe slightly expensive. Although sells fishing items.
Gift shop - Usual beach shop items, rock, sweets, ice cream etc.

Check tide times, as the road onto the site gets cut off at certain times.

We saw a rather unsavoury incident before we left, I made a complaint through email to the site management and they took the car reg details, and were very appologetic to us.

Overall, really nice area to camp, if you get a good spot on the site, facilities not great, but would return for the views alone!

Needed a break before all the kids arrrived at Shell Island, due to school holidays...
So with the endless bad weather always in our minds we packed the minimal amount of camping equipment, and as it is the UK, all the extras for the unexpected, the brollies the waterproofs the wellies, good job we only took minimal camping stuff..
Arrived on the Wednesday, could see from the approach road it was fairly quiet, but was surprised as to how empty it really was, the first field 1 tent the second field one more tent and the third, oh by now so crowded, 2 tents and and one of them was ours....
Got the tent up , last peg in as the heavens opened, sheltered in the jeep, made a cuppa, tea always tastes so nice in the great outdoors.
Ventured off to the pub, again so busy, more staff than guests....
My delight came with the other facilities, I dont know if it was because ut was relatively empty or they have new cleaning staff, the toilets were spotless, no mildew or wet floors, vanity sinks very clean mirrors u could see in.
The shower block had been completely blitzed, no more manky drains or grubby walls, the stainless steel walls were grime free, and at long last the air vents above, were now dirt free.
I dont care if its down to crowded facilities causing the grime or neglect, they still should employ enough people to keep on top of it, because the place was empty the facilities were immaculate, it should be clean always....
Now if they could just improve the attitude of the woman in the shop, has anyone ever told her you tell staff off discretely, not make them look stupid in front of customers, you dont get my respect for that, and u certainly get staff resentment from that type of mangement...
I did overhear people coming out of the shop talking about her grumpiness.....
We dont use the shop anymore because of her attitude.
Oh and I would like to say a big thank you to the "immature idiots" in field no 4, who certainly couldnt handle theeeeeeir alcohol, or their relationships, and one particular young lady who seemed to take pleasure in kicking her boyfriend while shouting at the top of her voice... yes you kept other campers amused and entertained most nights.... try growing up.....

Room Tip: Try the first 3 fields, no dogs and quite close to the facilities, fairly sheltered from the sea win...
