“Great Place!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 9, 2013

Great accommodation! Our room was lovely, good size, plenty of teas, coffees, hot chocolate and homemade biscuits. The breakfast was fantastic, with local sausages and bacon, and the fresh fruit salad was amazing! The restaurant menu had a good choice and the bar is well stocked with good wines! The owners were very welcoming and helpful, they provided maps of local walks as well as walking sticks, and were full of local knowledge. All in all a perfect break for us!

lovely hotel, good service at all times by polite friendly staff, whole hotel was always clean and spotless, perfect location for cadair idris (not so sure if you're there for anything else as it is a bit remote), room was smaller but not too small, very well decorated, floor slanted but we didn't find this an issue, shower didn't work at first but staff soon explained how to quickfix the airlock issue and this worked fine, nice menu in the restaurant but not much to suit us personally so we only ate in once, (however on this once is was lovely food), breakfast was great but maybe a bit late starting at 830am, no welcome pack in room which I felt is needed (for basic details of hotel mealtimes menu etc and for details of local area) (Ps cadair idris is a hard walk if you aint done a mountain in a while or you aint fit)

While the room was average really, the location was fantastic. The property has a lake right out back where a boat can be rented for half days or full days. It was a bit hard to locate at first, but worth finding. It is a short walk to get to the Cader Idris where the hiking was incredible! The views were absolutely stunning! I thought having check in at 3 PM was a bit late particularly since one is expected to check out before 11 AM. There were two bottles of water and one cookie which was stale to greet us, but I wasn't expecting much anyway

Dear Deborah.
Thank you for your comments and I am glad you thought we were worth the find.
The complimentary bottles of Welsh mineral water are provided together with a selection of Fairtrade and organic teas and coffees and we bake our butter shortbread biscuits daily.
I am very concerned about your last comment, especially as you seemed very disappointed that we could not accommodate you for another two nights stay later in the month! I would very much appreciate you contacting me personally either by telephone 01341422488 or by email gwernanhotel@btconnect.com so that we may resolve any issues. Many Thanks Eleri Roberts

A true gem of accommodation set in the most amazing setting. A very warm and friendly welcome by the hosts where nothing was too much trouble. The rooms are spacious, well equipped and stocked with quality beverages... Oh and homemade cookies!..
A well stocked bar, very tasty breakfasts and dinners from locally sourced produce.
If you enjoy fishing take your rod and flies.. Very idyllic , drifting on a rowing boat casting for trout.
We will certainly be revisiting.

What a delightful place this is nestled in a fold in the hilside part way up Cader Idris and surrounded by stunning views this up market bed and breakfast is the ideal location for walkers and cyclists and is close enough to Dolgellau to sample the delights of the local taverns although the two miles home is best completed by local taxi unless you like a steep hill climb after your beer! I have nothing but praise for this establishment, a warm welcome and attentive staff and if you do stay here there's a big surprise in store and that is that the food is simply sublime. Do book for dinner and although the menu is limited it is cooked to perfection on piping hot plates in the small restaurant. The rooms are well appointed and very comfortable in an unfussy but stylish way and the full Welsh breakfast is as near as damn it the best I have tasted. The hotel comes complete with a 12 acre trout lake but the lack of trophy fish in glass cases on the wall is probably testament to the difficulty you will find in landing one, a whole morning on the lake with my fly rod produced a big fat zero, probably why it's called fishing and not catching but even if you don't fish this is a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Try and get a room with a view of the lake

Having booked the hotel months ago, I had the need to cancel my stay within the "no refund" period of 7 days. With absolutely NO fuss or dodgy charges, the hotel let my room and made no charge. I am suitably impressed by this most reasonable behaviour and will definitely be re-booking. What a refreshing change. There are a number of much bigger hotels that could learn from this excellent approach.

We've just had a wonderful 2 night stay at the Gwernan, the team are very friendly and welcoming, the rooms comfortable and equipped with everything you need and the food and wine are lovely too. The location by the lake is so quiet and relaxing, we were lucky to have a beautiful hot and sunny weekend so could enjoy an evening beer looking out over the lake. We'll definitely be back.
