“would stay again”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

John and I stayed for. 2 nights on a kgb deal a refurbish is in progress and needed but this did not affect our stay. All the staff were professional friendly and very helpful at all times.lovely freshly cooked breakfasts. We ate 1 night in the hotel the food was great and not over priced. It as an oldie world look about but it fits in well with the lovely characteristic town. Thank you for a warm welcoming stay. Only downs the bed must have been a small double. Tv on the small side. Blinds in bathroom and air vent need a clean. In no way did this affect our stay. The kettle broke and was replaced as soon as we reported it.

Room Tip: 101 is small for a couple. 112 is very spacious

I have stayed with friends many times at the Royal Ship and will certainly stay there again. THis is a typical 'old fashioned' hotel and whilst parking can be a problem and the rooms have perhaps seen better days, the staff are friendly and everything is clean and tidy. The location is good and the food is of a high quality - particularly if you happen to be staying there when they have one of their special menus on!

Room Tip: If you have mobility problems ask for a room on the lower floors as the corridors and stairs are nar...

We stayed here recently. There are both good and bad points about the hotel.

The good things are the location and the friendly service. The hotel is very well situated in the centre of Dogellau and the receptionist was very friendly and always happy to help.
It is also nice to have a kettle with some tea, coffee, hot chocolate, milk and sugar in the room.

Unfortunately the quality of the bedrooms let the hotel down.
My bed had springs that dug into my back all night making for a very uncomfortable night. The shower was extremely hard to regulate and was either so hot that it burnt to the point of not being able to have a shower at all or it was downright cold.
Every time I tried to reduce the temperature it was too cold and so I would turn it up a tiny bit to get hot water and then it would burn. This means that during out stay of several nights I only once managed to have a proper shower because I gave up each time trying to regulate it. I even remember laughing to myself on several occasions because it was so ridiculous. I would compare the shower to that of a campsite.

Apart from the bed being uncomfortable with its evil springs and the evil shower, I must also mention the decor. The curtains look like they have been there for at least 30 years and are completely frayed around the edges to the extent that they look like they should belong to an abandoned old country house. The wallpaper is not much better and the room has no character at all.

The hotel is quite big and has the potential to be a really excellent one but only if the hotel has a complete make over. I would strongly advise the hotel owner to apply to appear on "The Hotel Inspector" TV show because this is a classic case of a hotel that is outdated and seriously needs a make over to bring out its potential.

The hotel looks nice on the outside, reasonably pleasant as you go in, ok-ish as you enter the bedroom and then as you stay overnight you begin to realise the bad things.

I would also strongly advise the owner of the hotel to stay in the rooms himself/herself so he/she realises what the problems are of actually staying and sleeping here.

I really hope the owner will invest some money in the hotel in the future, because as I said before, with a good make over it could be fabulous! BUT PLEASE SORT OUT THE AWFUL ROOMS!

We had booked the Royal Ship on an offer through kgb and it was certainly good value. We had a dog friendly room with an en-suite bathroom but no shower. The room was basic and clean, although the bed was not the most comfortable ever, and breakfast was simple and efficient with a choice of cooked dishes. we didn't eat in the hotel on an evening as we found 2 fantastic restaurants very close by, which we had to try. Dolgellau is in a great location for some fantastic walks eg Cadr Idris and the precipice walk and we would recommend The Royal Ship.

I live very locally, but I needed to be in mobile phone signal constantly for the last four days, so booked a room at the Royal Ship.

I have to say, that I was delighted to find the room airy and pleasant. Wifi available. Staff friendly and welcoming.

The old indicator - there's no one in the bar, is genuinely a case of - there's no one in town.

I can recommend the food. A great variety from pub food to really quite special.

A great family run hotel.

Small hotel in the middle of town. The evening meals were extremely good, well presented and a range of dishes on offer. Parking was difficult but have few spaces behind hotel. Main town car park also close to hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was comfortable, warm and clean.
Good area to stay for walking and visiting local villages.

Stayed here for a weekend in October
Arrived very late to be greeted by very helpful friendly staff. Room was very large and spacious, bathroom warm and clean, beds large and comfy, everything a hotel room should have. In the morning our boys (5 and 12) and us, loved the choice at breakfast from fruit to full welsh breakfast.
The only real down side is the parking, if the hotel car park is full there's a short walk to a larger puplic car park at the edge of town. So overall a nice clean friendly welsh hotel.
