“Nice room shame about the shower”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2012

I had to stay here for one night which was not planned. The room itself was a decent size and looked good until I went to use the shower. I hadn't looked at this when I first booked in as I was tired otherwise I would have said something. The shower surround was absolutely filthyso much so that I could not use it. It is a pity that something so obvious let my experience of my stay here become an unpleasant one

I booked this hotel for 15 women, for a 3 day walking weekend. Then having read some bad reviews I became very nervous about what to expect. I am pleased to say, I needn't have worried. We used 5 twin rooms with 2 people sharing each, and had single occupancy in 5 twin or double rooms. Nobody had problems with their rooms, all of were clean and comfortable.. One evening we ate dinner in The Captains Table, with lovely views over Dolgellau. The food was lovely and all the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Yes some of the decor is a bit dated and a little tatty, but certainly not to the point some of the reviews indicate! Of course it doesn't have a huge car park, afterall it was built before cars were invented! However, usually some of us manged to park in it's car park. Otherwise, there was plenty of street parking, right by the Hotel which was free on Sundays and from 6pm to 10am weekdays. The only point I would make is there is not a working lift, so if stairs are a problem for you, mention it when booking. The staff did offer to carry bags up to our rooms if necessary. This is not a 5 star hotel, but surely people shouldn't expect it to be with the prices you pay. We all had a lovely weekend stay in Dolgellau.

Good friendly service & good breakfast. They gave me hot coffee for my thermos flask each day. My room and bathroom were ok. However, dinner was mediocre - the fish was pretty but bad. The basic pub meals were ok. Good parking and good location in town center.

we booked our stay at the royal ship hotel through KGB website and will never be using them or staying at this hotel again. we booked this hotel without reading the reviews first and boy were we mistaken!

everything written in the other reviews is correct, after reading we found that we couldnt change the deal we had, so went to see for ourselves, thinking we could be pleasantly suprised. WE WEREN'T!

Parking: there was an area for parking- for 6 cars! this was full when we got there and when we left, we had to park on a main street and have the worry of having a ticket as there was no where to park.

Entrance: smelt of pee and Fish! not nice as you walk into the building as you can imagine.

Room 206: we had the pleasure of walking up 2 flights of stairs to get to our room, to find that it was awful. it was dirty, dusty, stained and had hairs everywhere. it was in major need of a re-furb. the bed didnt even have a duvet, just 2 old blankets, and the matress was cheap, old, bad quality and hard as a rock. the curtains looked like they had not been washed, ever! they were Brown and ripped and looked disgusting. there were stains on the carpet, which made us wonder what had been there.

Toilet: our room did not have an en suite, it was actually a corridor away and you had to find the right key on the fob to get in. there was a separate bathroom to a toilet. the toilet did not have a sink! and you couldnt lock the door, so if someone else had a key they could easily walk in on you. it was again in need of a serious refurb. the bathroom was horrible, it had a shower and a bath, of which the curtain was stained and brown.

Staff: the staff seemed friendly when we were there, which wasnt very long. when we decided to leave (3 hours after arriving) the boy behind reception didnt even ask us any questions or utter a goodbye.

i can be honest and say trust this review and the other on here, i did think that the only people who write reviews are ones who want to complain, but from first hand experience today they were all correct and i will be trusting them in the future for when we book a weekend away again.

Although we only stayed two nights, we were thoroughly happy with everything in and around the hotel. The staff were friendly and courteous, the food was marvellous and we simply adored our room, especially as it had a balcony which afforded us great views of the town and surrounding countryside.
We cannot fault this hotel at all. It has got to be the best in town. We would most certainly choose this as a stopover again should we be in the area in the not too distant future.

Room Tip: The room with the balcony has got to be the best in the hotel.

My wife and stayed at this hotel having booked two nights through KGB. We didn't read any reviews beforehand and have only just done so now so not biased in any way. There are a lot of comments that we would agree with for example lack of parking space (although we parked at the rear and didn't have problem), tatty decor throughout with peeling wallpaper and water stains. Room very comfortable, but with a narrow double bed. En suite quite small. Didn't eat in the restaurant so can't comment on that. It has to be said, hence the title, that it is difficult to comprehend whether we were in a hotel that wanted to be a restaurant; a pub that wanted to serve food and be a hotel or a mixture of both. The most important thing for us, if it is attempting to be a hotel, is that there is not a single area that could be said to be a lounge where the visitor could relax with a book after a hard days sightseeing, or have a brandy at the end of an evening. This was mentioned to a member of staff on our second night who agreed that "perhaps you just need somewhere to slob out" which is not a criticism of her, but an honest appraisal perhaps for a potential shortcoming. In fact she was very charming and only happy to help. Having said all of this, the staff were very polite, friendly and courteous which earned the three stars. If the assumption is made that it is only 'voucher' customers that are awkward then I would take issue with that as we have stayed in many hotels around the world, with or without vouchers, and make our own minds up on whether we have received value for money or not.

We booked through KGB deals for two nights, but only stayed one. We were disappointed by quality of rooms. The first room we were in with the torn curtains, and the toilet that kept nearly filling to the top, was over the kitchen, and the extractor fan there was so loud, we asked for another room. The second room on the second floor on the opposite side of the hotel was quiet, but dirty. The mattress was awful, the sheets were clean, but the blanket and throw were stained and did not smell very fresh. The plumbing was very noisy. Someone tried to get in our room about two in the morning, which was a bit scary. At breakfast we had to search through the cereal bowls for ones that did not have food stuck on from the previous day.
