“Dark, Dismal Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

The rooms certainly did not look like those in your sales display. The rooms were extremely dark and the decor was appallingingly dark, so much so we couldn't see in the wardrobe and had to feel to put the hangers back. There was a large stand fan, ironing board and iron in the wardrobe and the fan had to be removed before we could hang any clothes. Why would anybody want to stay in such a dark and dismal environment. We stayed at this hotel many years ago when it was family owned and it was wonderful.

Took my husband for early valentines. I paid for one of the new Upper Deck rooms, not that impressed really, still quite basic rooms, no draw space , not enough beverages in the room. We had the early bird meal, my starter was cold, fair piece of steak that was med rare instead of med well done, unfortunately we got stung on a bottle of rosé that was £19.95! Extortionate I thought. Pool very small for the hotel, bar area very noisy with locals I think, wouldn't be in a rush to go back, I would rather pay that bit extra for Carden Park!

This is a good hotel, with Starbucks, good trendy decor rooms and friendly staff.

Obviously I'm a moaning and complaining Brit so I need to find some faults. The main thing that annoyed me was that on being asked "do you want a bread roll with my dinner?". I expected a bread basket to be brought around with the usual tongs and to get a choice of white or brown etc.... I didn't expect a platter with breads, olives, oils. Nice though it was it resulted in a £5 pound charge!
I would also suggest you thinking about bring your own 6 block power adapter as I had to hunt under the desk to unplug the antique lamp to get to a socket for my phone. as you can see all minor stuff and one particular dinner lady went out of her way to make me feel welcome.

Easy to find, ample parking, very good facilities. Room was comfortable, clean and spacious. Large Flat screen TV and good channel choice and free WIFI with good conexn. Breakfast is buffet style, good choice and good quality.
On the downside, it was very busy and was woken twice in the early hours by a group of inebriated women charging through the corridors. Was only given one towell, no hand towell. Trying to locate a plug involved moving furniture. I know they cannot control their clientel, but if they want a higher rating they have to make the rooms more appealing and not be so stingey!
Did not make use of the leisure facilities.

We returned to this hotel as we were looking for property in the area. We found the reception staff's attitude much improved and very friendly this time. The room was huge and the beds very comfortable. We decided to have the early bird menu with out 8 year old. The cost was great for 3 courses- excellent value for money and would recommend. The restaurant staff were very attentive. After dinner we sat in the conservatory after and enjoyed the ambiance. The breakfast was good and had all the usual offerings.
We had a great stay and will be returning.
