I've been staying at the Tyddyn Llan for many years The previous owner, Peter Kindred, was something of a character and this was our third visit with the present owners.
We arrived on a Thursday afternoon and were shown to room 12, a pleasant enough room that was rather chilly. The bed was comfortable but made up with sheets and blankets not duvets. We then had afternoon tea, hoping the room may have warmed up when we returned. Not so, but we weren't too bothered but some guests may have been. We changed and went for dinner. Very pleasant and obliging Romainian(?) staff. The canapes were tasty as were the starters. We ordered rib eye steak and fillet steak, both with a pepper sauce. The steaks were cooked well and as we ordered them, but the sauce was far too peppery, also noted by the lady who sat next to us. Our puddings were ok, but not exceptional.
That evening the local area experienced a heavy snow fall that cut off the electricity, so our chilly room was even colder when we got up. We made light of the situation and fully understood that extremes of weather cannot be legislated for and went for breakfast. We were met by Mrs Webb, (this was the first time we had seen her since our arrival) who informed us that the kitchen was not operational and we were offered smoked salmon and scrambled eggs (good job we both like this and are not allergic to eggs), take it or leave it, made in the owners home, next door to the hotel, that surprisingly semed to have better kitchen facilities than the hotel. The coffee was made with hot water from a tap - not recomended. We both thought she was doing us a favour by offering us breakfast from her own home and if they could prepare scrambled eggs why couldn't they boil water for tea or coffee? Too much trouble?
OK, these were unforseen circumstances and although I was very surprised the hotel did not have an emergency generator (how can you run a catering business in such a rural location without one), we went with the situation. A fire was lit in the lounge and we, together with another very nice couple sat by the fire, waiting for something to happen. At this point we were joined by Mrs Webb, who could only moan about how the weather was going to effect business and how much money they were potentially going to loose. At 11 o'clock the electricity was restored, much relief from Mrs Webb who disappeared into her office and didn't even offer to make us a cup of fresh tea or coffee. When presented with the bill there is a space on the card reader asking for a gratuity. If I pay a gratuity I like it to go to the staff and not the hotel. When I was loading our bags into the car, Mr Webb (I've never met him before and only recognised him from photos in the hotel guide) walked past me. "Morning, not too good is it?" I remarked, only to be glared at with no recognition that I was a paying guest, or even a human being, whatsoever, not even a word !! Very rude.
In summary, it's a nice enough place living of a past reputation that no longer holds true, with very average food (not too sure how they maintain their rating), decent, if somewhat tired rooms with blankets on the beds (how can you offer blankets in 2013?), very pleasant and obliging staff, but the owners need to be a lot more customer friendly. and much less smug. Friends of ours, stayed here last year and came to the same conclusion.
It's a great pity that under it's present ownership, we will not be revisiting the Tyddyn Llan, nor will we be recomending it to any of our friends and associates, as we have in the past.
